Fenix 5 Step Goal Increases?

I upgraded to a Fenix 5, from a Fenix 3, about a month ago and noticed that my step goals are increasing faster than before. On the F3 once my step goal was above 10k it would only increase by about 100 steps a day if I exceeded the previous day's goal. But after moving to the F5 my step goal increases depending by how much I exceeded my previous day's goal. For example, on Sunday (6/3/18) I had 28,644 steps so on Monday my step goal increased from 20,250 to 21,930.

This isn't a huge deal I was just wondering if the F5 handles step goals differently, or if this is a new bug in the system?
  • The fenix 5’s Step Goal is working as it is designed. If you increase the number of your steps, it shows you are more active so it haves you a higher goal to reach based on a lot of factors like your user profile, your current goal and how much you pass that current goal.
    With that said, the method your fenix 3 was working leads me to wonder why it was giving you smaller increases. That could easily be explained if you had setup Auto Goal setting since the goal would go up at set intervals.

    If by "Auto Goal" you mean the setting you see in the attached picture, then yes I have both watches setup to use that same auto step goal setting.

    I found this formula on the forums a few weeks back and, while it is an estimate of what Garmin is using for the step goals, it did seem to match what my Fenix 3 was doing each day. The Fenix 5 seems to be on a more aggressive system that has increased my step goal from 15k\day to almost 22k\day in just 2 weeks. In that same time on my Fenix 3, with identical steps each day, my step goal would have only gone up a few hundred steps.

    Formula:
    • If your steps met today's goal:
      • If today's goal is less than 7500 steps:
        • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal + Today's goal * 6%

      • If today's goal is between 7500 and 10000 steps:
        • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal + MIN(Today's goal * 4% ; (Today's steps - Today's goal) * 20%)

      • If today's goal is more than 10000 steps:
        • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal + MIN(Today's goal * 2% ; (Today's steps - Today's goal) * 5%)



    • If your steps failed to meet today's goal, but you did meet your goal yesterday:
      • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal - (Today's goal - Today's steps) * 5%


    • If your steps failed to meet today's goal, and you didn't meet your goal yesterday either:
      • If today's goal is less than 7500 steps:
        • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal - Today's goal * 5%

      • If today's goal is between 7500 and 10000 steps:
        • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal - Today's goal * 7.5%

      • If today's goal is more than 10000 steps:
        • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal - Today's goal * 2.5%
