Question to Garmin Staff. After this update free space on my F5X dropped from almost 6gb to 1gb. Is it normal? Now there is no place for another maps, that I use. This files are still in my device (D4713060C.img and D6019000A.img) Are they required or just the temps that should be removed after succesful update?
  • The 2017.10 cycle map is 3.2GB. The 2018.10 cycle map is 8.3GB! That's more than 5GB larger and why GF3-2017 has lost 5GB of space.

Due to having other maps installed, I do not have space to even load the map update. But an increase in size of 5GB for a map that was originally 3GB seems excessive. Is this really correct or did something go wrong here? Either the old map had a lot of missing data or the new one covers a lot more. The version number seems odd too. 2018.10 I thought these were based on date, but we are not near October 2018.
  • 2018.10 is the first one in the 2018 series, next one would be 2018.20

Automotive maps are up to 2019.10 ... so there is no relation to even the year :)
  • Thanks for the info, but the size increase is worrying.

With 14.4GB of available storage, one map taking 8.3GB seems wrong. If I total the 8.3GB for the 2018 cycle map, 2.3GB for the TopoActive EU East, and 3.4GB for the TopoActive EU West this gives 14GB which leave pretty much nothing for anything else even if I were to delete my 1.6GB of OSM maps.

There has got to be something wrong with am 8.3GB cycle map on a 14.4GB device.
  • Hi,
I also have much less storage space left after the map-update.
Was the previous cycle map (EU 2017.10) divided into 2 maps; South west and North East?

How is it possible to understand the match between files and maps? In other words how do you link filename (file with extension img) with map type (Cycle map, TopoActive East...)?
  • Same here. In my watch I can choose:
    topo active Europe west v4
    topo active Europe est v4
garmn cycle map EU North East 2018
garmin cycle map EU South West 2018
world wide DEM base map NR
    Garmin DEM Map EU 2017.20

The same happened to me. I had to delete almost all my custom maps to even fit this update into the watch. Now the storage is almost completely spent.
I seem to have a lot of new maps to choose from though, which I didn't expect. It seems like this "Cycle Map" update contained A LOT more maps as well?

If you use basecamp, this will tell you the name of each map along with the filename once it has read the watch.

How to roll back the map to previous version?
  • Do you use the Cycle map? Does it have good data?

I think it's based from OpenStreetMap cycling data and doesn't cover good enough in my area. So I prefer OpenStreetMap or Garmin topo maps in my area. If it's really 8 GB in size, probably I'll delete it completely after update and backing up. :D
