Google Maps and Fenix5x

The other day i was in Chicago on a trip and was looking for a place to grab a bite. i looked it up on google and got the directions through google maps. i was walking around with my phone up, looking very touristy, and thought "wait a second, i have a sweet garmin watch, i should be able to do this no problem!"
up until now, my Fenix has seen mostly wristwatch duty. so this was my first time to really use the watch, and i was excited! so i tried to figure out a way to send the directions to the watch.... can't. then i thought i would look it up in the POI search. after a painfully long time to acquire the GPS signal, I'm assuming because of towers, i took a scroll through the POIs. Not there.
like 2 seconds later, my girlfriend pulls out her phone, looks it up, sends it to her apple watch and smuggly says "there, i got it"
I cried a little inside!

so my question is two fold.

My watch is sync'd to my phone. my phone has GPS signal, and my watch does not. Is there no way for my watch to get the GPS location or piggy back off my phone's GPS?

Secondly, if is there anyway for me to search for a place and send that to my watch for step by step directions to come through?

thanks
