Fenix 5 HR only in workout

Hi,

I bought Fenix 5 HR (had non-HR before) and I'm probably overseeing something. Can somebody give me advice how to set HR optical sensor to be turned on only within workout, but let the continuous (24/7) reading off? I don't care about 24/7 reading, it only consumes battery.

When I want to run, I have to turn on HR sensor before and turn it off after workout. Is that normal?

Thank you!
  • There is no way to have the fenix 5 to turn the Wrist Heart Rate on only when you start an activity. If you want to turn it while between activities, it has to be done at Settings -> Sensors & Accessories -> Wrist Heart Rate.
  • OHR is a pretty small power drain - even with the OHR on 24/7, it will still give you over 2 weeks battery life.

Taking the watch off overnight will shut down the OHR, giving you 1/3 of the potential battery savings anyway.

I've noticed that Garmin has been dumbing down the menu system taking control away from the user. I see that now you can't turn off Bluetooth and Wifi in the menu, the reason I liked Garmin devices is because you gave me control. This is frustrating, like if you have a feature already why take it out? I literally switched from Fitbit because there is no way to control Bluetooth radio from the menu. And now I see it is GONE on my Fenix 5.
  • You can switch off Bluetooth via the Lights Menu. You can also but it on a hotkey. It is called "phone" or better "Telefon" in the german menu. Cant talk about wifi because mine has non.
