Fenix 5x as a Golf GPS

I have the Fenix 5X and have been trying to use it as a GPS for golfing. The accuracy of this device prevents me from using it as it is out as much as 50 yards at times. Is there a calibration or something that needs to be done in order to use this watch for golfing?

Used my Fenix 5 (firmware 10.51) on a local course yesterday. Same results as you, in that my colleague had an S20 and both showed completely different yardages. We both downloaded the course using the Garmin Golf app. My Fenix 5 was consistently between 15-20 yards under. I also have an easy green laser rangefinder and the S20 was a lot (satisfactorily) closer to the results of that than my Fenix. The functionality seemed fine, but unless the distances are accurate unfortunately I cannot use it for golf. This is frustrating in terms of the obvious benefit of statistical record keeping of the scorecard etc.
  • I have no problem with yardage, it is usually pretty close (I also use a Bushnell Rangefinder to compare). The problem that I have is that with the Auto Scoring mode on, the watch always moves me to the next hole even though I am not even on the green and automatically records a Par for that hole. Additionally, the shot tracking is awful, it doesn't always record every shot and sometimes it even records wrong ones. Is anyone else having the same issues?
  • If I were a betting man I would bet your watch distance units are set to kilometers, therefore golf distances are being reported in meters. Set the distance units to miles and golf distances will be very accurately reported in yards.
  • We know this for a fact.
There is a menu option at the app giving you the choice for seeing Golf distance unit. Problem is that even if choose yards it only reflects in the app itself but not in the watch during the game.
We would like the Golf app in the watch allowed us to choose the unit independently.

    Regards,

  • I have both a 5X and an S20. Each device keeps accurate GPS track. Differences I have noted are the S20 had club tracking which was nice to see which clubs you used after the round. However, since the CT10 devices now work with the Fenix 5 series with the latest firmware release you can also get club tracking automatically on both devices.

I do have a few issues with the CT10 and Fenix together as I'm only able to pair 13 clubs. Not sure if this is Fenix 5X, firmware or defective CT10's. Garmin has sent me some new CT10's to test but I'm betting it is a firmware glitch.
  • Yes, same thing constantly, the shot tracking is terrible, it constantly misses out on shots. It also moves me to the next hole or even a neighbouring holes even when I'm not close to the green, quite annoying, since it takes so much time to manually move back and record the shots

  • I had a 5X and now have a 5X plus - I can confirm that I had major issues with distance and accuracy until I set the units on the watch to Miles from kilometres.

  • So I am answering my own question in hopes this helps someone else. When you buy one of these watches and activate it in Canada, all your settings default to Metric. Using the golf app, your distances then are in Meters, not Yards which all golf courses in Canada use. You have to go and set the Units to Miles from Kilometers. Can't believe I am the only one to notice that...

  • We should be able to set the unit in miles only within the Golf app.

The way it is today I have to set miles while golfing and back to metrics after the game. It sucks.
