bluetooth issues between garmin 5x and android oreo 8.1

Since i updated my mobile phone to android oreo 8.1 (my phone is a bq x-pro), if i get out of range with the garmin fenix 5x, i lose connection and cannot connect again to the phone.

It doens't pair with garmin connect mobile, and it doesn't even recognize the watch.

The only way to solve this is to remove the watch from the phone bluetooth devices and pair it again with garmin connect mobile.

And everytime the watch gets out of reach of the phone, i must do that again (remove and re-pair).

It didn't happen with android 7.

Is there a solution for this ? I have allready did a hard reset to the android phone, but the problem remains.

I've seen other people with the same problems in other foruns.

I talked to Bq. They told me they trying to solv the problem.

Until then, they told me that garmin connect mobile 3.20.3 works.

I've tryed it, and it really works without any problem.

It connects the fenix 5x when you get out of range and return again (the latest version of garmin connect mobile never connected again until you pair and unpair the watch from the phone)

It even connects the watch without internet, but obviously just the calls and SMS (good when you travel and don't want to use mobile data to reconnect the watch and the phone...)

Here is the link to download garmin connect mobile 3.20.3:

Thanks for this! I´ve got a Vivosmart HR+ and BQ Aquaris X. After downgrading to 3.20.3 it works again.
It's embarrassing for Garmin to go this way. Here in Germay a girl that wrote to Garmin was told "it's not our problem, go to BQ"
I will never buy again a garmin item.

I have respectively had the same problem with my "bq aquaris x" and my "vivosmart 3" after upgrade to android 8.1.
I have tried several things and invested some time, but had no success. I solved it for me by using my older samsung j3 smartphone with android 6.x.
But today i found this forumpost.
After downgrading to 3.20.3 it works again, so it's same as frosch666 wrote.
I also tried older 4.x versions, down to the first one (4.1.5). No one worked.
Seems that one have to go down to middleage and use a 3.x-Version.

P.S. I also have a "garmin vivoactive 3", and this one has/had never a problem with the new 4.x version. My wife has also the "vivoactive 3" and also a "bq aquaris x" and she had the issue! But only until last week. Last week it suddenly worked. Only noticed that by accident. From that on it workes. We have no idea why?? Very strange this all!!!

My watch's disconecting as soon as i close Garmin Connect Mobile App. As long as app is running ( even in background) there is no problem with connection (even when phone is disconnected it connect back awithout problem). I've tried walkaround with older version - it worked but then app just update automaticaly and when i tried it again i had no luck it did not work.
For now i just keep Garmin Connect Mobile App running in background - prevent it from closing when cleanng recent apps and waiting for new working version.

Since i updated my mobile phone to android oreo 8.1 (my phone is ASUS Zenfone max pro m1), if i get out of range with the garmin vivoactive3 , i lose connection and cannot connect again to the phone. The bluetooth pairing is intact with phone, i see it in paired devices of the phone but Garmin connect app does not recognize device. The only way to solve this is to remove the watch from the phone bluetooth devices and pair it again with garmin connect app. And everytime the watch gets out of reach of the phone, i must do that again (remove and re-pair). It didn't happen with android 7. Is there a solution for this ? I have already tried all Bluetooth related solutions for Oreo on Google and reset my phone and Vivoactive 3 multiple times. Still no solution. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1374198.png
  • I have A Galaxy S7 and running Oreo 8.0 with no problems with Garmin Connect. I was thinking of upgrading to 8.1. Now, I'm worry if I do I might run into this. Anyone running Galaxy S7 with 8.1 and not having connect problems?

I used my f5x the last year with an old huawei phone. No problem. Bought the huawei p20 and am having the same problem you guys are mentioning. I tried everything, but what sorted it out for me, is that the (i dont know if its an androide feature og huawei) "artificial intellegense" or what ever they call it, it turns of some of the features on any app that is does not think should be running, like background hardware use or wifi/celluar network. I had to manually go inn to the app settings and turn that off, so that the garmin connect have all permissions to run the app without any interferense.

Now i have no issues at all.. It reconnects every time i get close to my phone, and all notifications show up.

Not saying its the cure for everything, but worked for me :)

It might just be your phone perhaps as my Galaxy S7 on Android 8.1 is fine with my new Vivoactive 3 no disconnects at all.
  • No trouble connecting/reconnecting multiple times, activity uploads, notifications on Nokia 6.1 (Oreo 8.1 w/June update) and Fenix 5X v9.72.
Nokia chose the androidone path that puts the onus of update responsibilities on Google. As expected, everything just works.
