No, I don't think its dead. Just been a longer cycle on this upgrade. Perhaps because more watches on the same code base, fixing more issues, etc. I doubt we'll see a 6 until 2019 or later and even the newer watches use the same common code so we are for a few updates and beyond, imho.
Connect IQ 3.0 support is still under development that will update the 5x with new map API interfaces. Users will be able to add own data (locations, polygons) to map views.
Nice to see the Mini reviewed after getting an email about it. I have a second gen Delorme SE and having the Fenix 5X and Mini Integration is compelling (though cost me to upgrade). If you have a device on the bike and get separated or fall and cannot access your pack with the device, you can trigger an SOS from the watch.

Yes, it will be moving to CIQ3, and in the CIQ simulator, I'm already using the mapping API on it (it's cool BTW!)
Also, DCR posted a review of Garmin's Inreach Mini, and in the blog post he has a section on watch integration, and lists the f5 device family. (f5s/f5/f5x)

You're right. I can do so w/Bluetooth. Excuse my ignorance. The Mini will connect using Ant+.
Music playback needs standart Bluetooth capable Cluetooth chip inside the device. However, Fenix watches seem to have a chip supporting only Bluetooth Low Energy. So I don't think that'll be possible ever. But may be nice if it is...
