Hard reset. Frozen during activity

Hi.
Has anyone else had the F5 freeze on them whilst racing an old activity?
I was out cycling and decided to ‘race’ against the same route I had ridden a few days previous.
Towards the end of the ride, the unit froze.
I held down the light button to switch the unit off, switched it back on, but just had the triangle logo appear. It would not go past this screen.
I had to perform a hard reset which as you know is extremely frustrating because you’re essentially back to square one with the unit.
I’ve had serval F5 replaced due to barometer issues, but none have frozen on me before. Hoping it’s not a sign of things to come or a faulty unit
thanks!
  • I have similar experience with "Virtual partner" on my F5s. I tried 2 times to use this function (race against previous activity) - in both cases the watch get stuck - screen frozen, buttons not responding, only the 1km laps were still vibrating. Luckily, after turning the watch off and on, the activity was there (just without the HR in the first case).
    12.8.2017 - FW 5.10 - stucked after 15km of 30km run
    24.1.2018 - FW 7.60 - stucked after 5km of 15km run

So I rather do not use this function.

Hi sgreenotrek, I had exactly the same problem yesterday. I was re-doing an old trail running activity, it was the first time I was using this kind of functionality, my Fenix 5 started to work slower when changing screens and at the end it froze. I tried to reboot it but I got the blue triangle logo frozen and the only solution that worked was also to perform a hard reset. It must be a bug. At this time I don't trust the device. Possible side effect, I cannot send courses from Garmin Connect to Fenix 5 anymore, not sure if it's related.

i agree - I have lost confidence in the unit, and won’t be using the race feature of the watch
I went out for a run today, and the screens were extrememly slow to toggle through, although luckily everything recorded ok and it didn’t freeze. I have emailed garmin with the big and hope they get back to me.
Mira very frustrating when you rely on your watch for stats, and it freezes at the end of the activity! ????

sgreenotrek - I had exactly the same thing happen to me today though on a Garmin 935, which is much the same software. I had decided to use the 'race against a previous activity' feature for the first time, and after about 7km into the run it displayed a heart-rate too high alert, which was fair enough, but that then took ages to clear, before showing the usual running screen. A few moments later I realised that the data on the screen wasn't updating and realised it had frozen. Tried all the buttons but it still stayed frozen, so then I held down the light button to close it down. After powering it back on, it's now permanently stuck at the blue triangle of death screen. Tried plugging it in to the computer and Garmin Express but it's not showing up as a device, so looks like I'll have to hard-reset it.

So, I won't be using that 'race previous activity' feature again unless Garmin explicitly announce they've recognised there was a bug with it and it's now fixed! Are you listening Garmin?

Up till this point, the watch worked flawlessly, so I'm hoping this isn't the start of it continually resetting, running slow, poor battery life etc. I had previous experience of a 610 which deteriorated in that fashion, so I'll be anxiously waiting to see how the 935 behaves after this - I've only had it two months or so...

what third party Connect IQ fields etc you using? I ask as I use Virtual Partner and Routes a lot and have never had a freeze

I'm using 'OneRunData' and 'Strava Live Suffer Score', both of which worked perfectly before today. The only thing I did today that was different was to select the 'Race previous activity' so I think the finger of suspicion points to that feature, or possibly a combination of 'Race previous activity' with one of my connect IQ apps due to some incompatibility?

Definitely won't be trying that feature out again for a long time - when you consider how long it takes to reset your watch and restore all your data and watch settings.

I've just discovered that sync'ing to Garmin Connect doesn't really back up all your watch settings! Apps, watch faces, widgets etc all need to be manually installed and configured all over again. So all that inconvenience, not to mention losing my run details and losing the use of my watch until I could get back to a computer, makes this a pretty high priority bug as far as I'm concerned!

What FW are you on? Worth trying 9.02 perhaps - it may already be fixed?
  • Freezing in activity happened 3 times for me in the past year, with different firmware. Twice while following a track on a trail activity, once on a simple trail running activity with nothing fancy. After a reboot, the activity was still there. Reboot was very long

Definitely worth reporting to Garmin - they'll ask you for logs - help them find it and zap it :)
