FTP not updating (nor does training load after hard reset)

hi,

since a few weeks i own a fenix 5 which is far from what i have expected from a "professional" device. sometimes some things are working, sometimes they are not working and a lot of random numbers for different things.

one of the things i do not understand is, that my FTP is not updating. in the beginning and only one time i got an FTP value after a bike ride (with power meter and all the needed stuff). since then nothing changed and nothing was updated on the FTP side. the last update date is from that single day. after that i did a lot of rides and VO2 is updating after every ride (though the value does not change).
am i doing something wrong or is this just another fenix/garmin thing?

another thing which is annoying me, is that after a necessary hard reset the training status and training load is not updating any more. perhaps i have to wait for the 7 days to finish, but it is very strange, that a hard reset makes the training load stop working. all the data of the days before is there - so why does the fenix/connect app not use this data and goes on showing/calculating the training load?

  • Training Load is calculated on the watch, so if you do a hard reset, it loses the previous data TL was based on - it doesn't backload it from Garmin Connect. You will need 7 days of data for this to work properly again. (Although supposedly there will be an update later this month to allow better intergration of data from the Fenix and Edge series, so this may change.

    I assume that Settings> Physiological Metrics> Auto Detection> FTP = On.

The FTP autodetect algorithm requires sufficient HR data both below and above threshold to work - not every ride will generate enough data at the right ranges (in fact most probably won't). If this concerns you, there is a guided FTP test in the workouts on the watch which should generate sufficient data. Also, FTP is a metric that changes only slowly - people can train for months to get just a 20W improvement, so you won't see a change in FTP every day even with sufficient data.
  • thank you very much for explaining what is happening. this makes me understand things a lot better.

losing the continuous training status and training load because of a hard reset is not the best way to handle things. i made a backup of my data and restored the data after the hard reset. i wonder why gamin/fenix does not go on using backuped data!?
the fact, that the fenix (or at least it's software) makes a lot trouble and people are forced to make hard resets quite often, does not help either. at least one should be able to go on after a hard reset.
