Watch does not stop at end of workout

I have uploaded a training plan on my Garmin Felix 5x and I notice that when I reach the finish of a workout, or even the end of some steps, the clock just continues on ticking until I stop it manually. I have used the same workouts on my Garmin FR 630 where I do not have this issues. Example: today I had a workout that started with 15 minutes workout, Once I reached the end of 15 minutes, nothing happened until I manually hit the lap button. I then had a few intervals, where at the end of each part the clock would move on to the next part. However, at the end the same thing happened with the cool-down; the clock just kept on ticking at the end of the cool down.

I am stumped.

Regards,

Hanno
  • It's been discussed several times on this forum. It's by design. All recent garmins work this way. The workout continues until you press stop.

I see. That is a pretty stupid decision by Garmin, asking me to keep track of the different steps of a workout and having to manually go to the next step. Makes me wonder why I spent that sort of money on a Felix when considerably cheaper Garmin watches perform better.

What was the termination criterion for this step? Time, distance or what? Please post the steps for this workout. Unless this is a bug with the 5X, workouts will usually progress through each step without the need for manual interference, provided of course they have been set up properly.

Keeping the timer going at the end of a workout was in response to some vociferous individuals who couldn't/wouldn't program a last step in the workout that terminated using 'Go until lap press'.
  • I find this feature quite useful - I often do structured workouts at the velodrome, or running on a path where there are no obstacles I have to stop for. At the end of the workout, I run/ride home, which is all part of my overall training load.

It's not stupid - it's just different to what you are used to. And the current method at least gives you the choice - it's not hard to hit the Stop button at the end of the workout if that is what you want to do.

That's exactly why ending the last step of a workout with 'go until lap press' was there!

In the past, a workout ended at the last step OR when you pressed lap/stop after 'go until lap press'. Now there is no option to do anything other than press stop to end a workout. Some of us liked a workout to end at the end on occasion!

Ummm, I guess I misunderstood. What I meant was that the timer does not stop at the END OF WORKOUT, but it should automatically advance to the next stage when the workout is set up correctly. If your watch does not do that, then there's something wrong, either with your watch or your workout.
  • The support for structured workouts is great in the F5. I have 13 different (depending on sport) workouts. For each step, you can decide to go until lap-pressure, time, distance, pulse and even calories. You can have warnings based on speed, pulse, etc.

Usually I have a warm up step that I decide the length of myself by ending it by pressing the lap button, then I enter the work/rest-session using the guiding structure in the watch, with countdown before change of step. At the end I usually have an open ended cool down.

I want guidance during the structured part of the session, and I want to decide when the entire session is over. Exactly as offered currently. It is well worth reading the manual, and also try out various types of sessions. There are possibilities to use repeats and more.

    Hi Philip,

The criteria was time, in this case 15 minutes. That step did not stop after the assigned time; all other steps (this particular workout is interval training) did.

i can see how the watch not stopping at the end of the workout would work for some people but I strugggle with it. After long runs exhaustion frequently makes me forget stopping the timer and the. I have my drive home or grocery shopping as part of my workout.
