When is the next update due?

When I first purchased my Fenix 5 it seemed as though there was an update every few weeks to every month, but this has slowed to a snails pace. I understand that the software version 8.54 is available in beta format, but I am curious of predictions as to when this will roll out in a non-beta format? Has Garmin shifted their development focus to a new product?

I believe they work on new device always when is silence they introduce new watch ;-) so maybe we can expect end of May because stable version have almost 2 months ;-)

I’m not so sure there are new devices this time though. They promised a big update over the complete range that data should be sychronized across devices. So a training in an edge should affect the fenix. Historically they had big issues even sychronizing a single device with garmin connect so this will probably be a nightmare. I assume all resources are used for this major task.

Hopefully they even build infrastructure to remotely configure a device (from web/app) but that they will likely not introduce on current gen devices. They must have something to market the new ones with.

Many of the initial firmware updates were bug fixes, which can be fixed fairly easily and released quickly. Developing new functionality such as running power (Nov 17) takes longer.

I think Garmin have indicated April as the release for better intergration of data between Fenix, Forerunner and Edge devices (presumably occuring through Garmin Connect). This may or may not require a lot of coding but it would require quite a lot of cross-testing of devices. eg. Fenix 5 with Edge 500 series, Edge 800 series, Edge 1000 series, then repeat with the new Forerunner 645, etc. Such a extensive testing program naturally takes time to complete, so a gap between firmware updates is to be expected.

Hopefully we'll see soon the Training Effet, Vo2... sync between devices that is much needed and anticipated this month.

I think they are working on a new device that they plan to release next year.

Sorry - was referring to the pending update which will allow cross-intergration of Training Status, Training Load and other advanced Firstbeat metrics between devices.

The older True-Up had far more limited functionality.

I bet very very soon we will see a new update. The Garmin Connect IQ developer summit is right NOW (17-19 april) and they will be presenting Connect IQ 3.0.0 (currently 2.4.4). It's likely the update is rolling out in a matter of days.

Do you think "old" (pre-645 and non-music) devices get iq3?
