map lag - Epix vs. Fenix 5x

Hi,

I've question to those one, who own(ed) Epix and now use Fenix 5X. I've currently F3 and still thinking about waiting for F6 ;-), since my F3 is in quite good condition.
There is a plenty of cheap Epix offers online (new ones), so I've started to think about combination F3 (everyday) and Epix (trail/mountain run mainly, bike sometimes).
Here come the question - is really map lag such an issue on Epix? Does F5 change it significantly?

?ukasz
  • I really can't remember having a map lag problem with my epix. There are in my opinion only map lags, if you have enabled more than two maps which are covering the same area (apart of the basemap).

As as far as I remember, the map drawing of the epix is the same as on 5x ( I own both). Have you a link for map lag issues?

For trail/ mountain runs a good elevation plot is needed (in my opinion) and that is missing on the epix.

  • There was a map lag on Epix on early software after few hours or run. Actualy even after 5h of run i dont have lags on map on Epix. Of course, smothness somewhat depends on how the map large is. I use local small 100mb map and it is very good :)
  • Epix and Fenix 5X have same processors. So they'll perform close to each other. Maybe Garmin optimised Fenix 5X code. Also their frequency may be different. For example, ConnectIQ apps were running faster on Fenix 5X a few months ago. Then they slowed it down. Haven't tried Epix myself but I don't think you'll have big lags.

For looking for places in the map it's slow but for use in activities, tracking routes etc. it's fast enough for me.
  • If you want to use this for mapping and navigation, get the Epix. I recently upgraded to the fenix 5X. I took it back the next day for a full refund. It does not have the same mapping and navigation as the epix. The main issue is that with the Epix, as with the garmin hand held GPS devices, you can have multiple tracks/courses display on the map. This is handy if you have multiple options you wish to look at while hiking. You can display a track without having to "Navigate it".
On the 5X you can only see a track by navigating it. Putting down a thousand bucks (Kiwi) to get an inferior device did not work for me. O back to the Epix which is great.
  • I was using EPIX for a long time. Now my son is using this watch. I am now owner of the Fenix 5x watch. I didn't see any difference in both maps. When I am on the way with my son, we can compare the maps. We find out, that both maps are equivalent!

  • Really????? Dangit. I was going to buy a 5 plus to because I figured the fenix would be better. My gps acquisition has been sucking hard on my epix, but i do enjoy the battery life and other features. One that i wish it has was custom waypoint markers like my fenix 2 had. Kind of doubting whether i want to spend the extra dough for a fenix.....
