Problem with Fenix 5 GPS accuracy

I just finished a full marathon today, but my Fenix 5 shown 46km , extra 4km , mostly the inaccuracy is in town centre where high rise buildings. My previous Fenix 3HR also having such issue but extra 2km only. There's no such problem in Forerunner series which is extra 300m only.

Please advise if this is firmware bugs or hardware GPS sensors issue, how to tackle and solve this GPS accuracy problem. Other brand like Suunto only added extra 1km
  • If you want better accuracy just get a footpod in my opinion. You'll also be able to see your pace in real time much better.

If you still wan't more accurate GPS I would go for another watch.
  • Aliasin??? seriously?? 310xt and 620 were better.... I have the same issues with my fenix 5... gps dont work correctly .

310 was probably better. But a footpod is even more accurate. It has been well documented by fellrnr using the scientific method.
  • I am also tired of the poor gps performance of my fenix5s. Look at my marathon trace this week. You can see the big difference between my trace and the real course. I had gps with glonnass which is supposed to be more accurate but is actually far from the performance of my forerunner 10 I had 5 years ago. I have been waiting for improvement for 1 year, but unfortunately, I think I can throw this watch away. It is a shame, Garmin should be force to refund for selling such horrible watch at this price.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1332787.png

Hi Aliasin, will Garmin running dynamic pods gives better distance accuracy ? I forgot to wear it. Only use during training .
  • Is all fenix series (3/3HR/5/5S/5X) having GPS accuracy issue? Something to do with the GPS sensor location of the watch. due to space constraint for bigger watch battery compartment ?

Forerunner series dont have such severe accuracy issue.

Can someone from Garmin explain this problem. ?.

Hi Splintoo, your GPS is not too bad, not so many highrise buildings you passed by?

Here's the my map , the clouded in pink are areas where GPS went haywire thus affected running pace.

Are you kidding ? during one hour my trace is more than one kilometer from my actual position. If that is not bad !!! The city of the race was Paris, and the GPS located me at the border when a was in the center. I think the error is up to 4 km on this trace. And the worse part is along the river, where there is no building. The temperature was 20 degree and the sky was blue. No excuse for garmin. This is the worse trace a ever seen from a running watch, and is is from one of the most expensive that ever exist.

That's weird, without tall buildings, GPS should be fine. I wonder if Garmin representative can enlighten what's go wrong with Fenix 5, my previous Fenix 3HR also having similar GPS accuracy problem.

Hope firmware can rectify it. If hardware, then it's extremely disappointed and sad.

Turning on glonnass in fact makes things worse.
