Map Quality - activities low detail vs Suunto ?

I've noticed when doing hikes or skittering and viewing this activity afterwards in either Garmin Connect or other apps like Strava the terrain detail is VERY poor - but with SUUNTO movescount you have a detailed topographic map where you can view you route.
Is there a way to get higher detail topographical maps to view you activity apart from exporting the GPX file and using other maps outside of Garmin platform?
This feature alone is almost a reason for me to leave 5x for SUUNTO.

  • Afraid you may have to move to SUUNTO! From a 'topo' map point of view, your option with Garmin is OpenStreet Map or Google terrain (along with the non-terrain Bing and google modes). Movecount has the MapBox Terrain option which certainly has a better appearance than Openstreet or Google terrain (can't talk to accuracy however). Movescount also allows for a much higher zoom level - although, in reality, this does not provide more detail - just easier to see the detail that is there, not to mention you start really stretching the apparent accuracy of your GPS track anyway. I also hate that you cannot expand the map in GC to full screen (unless I have missed a method) while you can in Movescount. In otherwords, if you don't move to SUUNTO then plan on finding another mapping tool that meets your needs and importing your track.
  • You can always buy Garmin's 24k topos, and use it with basecamp. These maps will show great detail on watch, as well as in Basecamp. There are free topos with better resolution at www.gpsfiledepot.com

personally, I always export a GPX to something like CalTopo or ExpertGPS or gogle earth.
  • Easy option: sync all activities between Connect and Movescount. I have watches from each company and want all activities in sync. SyncMyTracks on Android does that very well.
  • You can also export gpx from your hiking and view it in the application and map according your preferences.
