Altimeter wrong during fast decent. Ande therefore the decent don not match acent

Hi. I am New to fenix 5x. have only had the watch for two weeks. previously I have used: fenix 1, fenix 2, Epix and fenix 3hr. I am currently training skimo sessions.
all of my previous watches have showed almost identical acent/decent during stable weather conditions. My New fenix 5x do not!. the altimeter is correct during acent, but when i ski Down, the alitmeter is off by 400m. and the decent show 450m to little. is there anyone that can confirm that this is normal?

have also done a cupple og running outdoor. the altimeter is very stable there. acent/decent is spot on. but i only have 190m acent/decent during the wourkout.
I have only used FW. 8.00 on my watch.

please help me.

best regards

  • You can set the barometer mode to altimeter before your activities and any change in pressure will be directly recorded as altimeter change. That should work in your situation.

However, don't forget to set it back to Auto after your activity, as any weather pressure change will result in altimeter change.

The watch was set to altimeter mode in watchmode before activity, and the autocalibrate of the altimeter was turned off. So it was in total altimeter mode.
have also tried autocal of altimeter and automode in watchmode. None work. For me it seems like the altimeter is responding wery slow when the altitude is changing fast.

  • Unfortunately, I observed quite similar incorrect behavior during downhill skiing.
After the downhill, the watch showed the descending height for a long time after the end of the real descent. The same goes when I use the ski lift up - I stand on the top of the hill but on the watch the height is constantly increasing. In both cases it takes from several to several dozen seconds, as if the altimeter display was working in slow motion :-). What's worse after each up-down series, altitude indications are getting farther away from the right ones.

In my opinion, this is only an issue of the downhill application, because if you do an altimeter calibration using a GPS signal, it immediately shows the correct altitude. Unfortunately, this does not affect the height in the downhill application, which still shows the wrong height (even by 100m). My Fenix ??3 never had such problems.

I do not know if this behavior is not affected by the patch which "Fixed an issue where the altitude on device wasn't accurate when using the Jumpmaster app."

In the attachment the height graph - 10 times downhill, which starts and ends in the same place.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1319508.jpg

Thanx for the reply. This is very frustrating.
Never had any problems with my fenix3hr...

  • I confirm that ski app is very unstable and in addition there is also a problem with the time recording .......
