8.00 Update - What have Garmin done to 'improve' resting HR detection?

Hi folks,

So, since receiving the 8.00 update yesterday, the resting HR detection on my Fenix 5X has been completely off. I have no idea if it's simply broken, or whether Garmin are using a strange new algorithm to determine what it is.

For example, today my resting HR is showing 61, even though my heart rate has been consistently in the low 50s since getting to my desk, and as low as 43. The number isn't updating.

Is anyone else getting the same?
  • Ok, so the resting HR has just updated for the first time today... from 61 to 58!

Since most of the time my HR has been below that, I can only assume that the 'improved' formula is taking an average from over a prolonged period of time and including time spent moving around, etc.

Very bizarre indeed. Don't like this at all!

Edit: or is it an average for where no/minimal movement is detected? In which case, office work represents 'rest' as do various strength exercises, like planks.

    Hmmm...
  • Mine is showing about 8 points lower than normal (48 --> 40).
  • My RHR is now inaccurate by ~20 beats on the high side. I'm wondering what prompted this 'upgrade.'
  • I don't like improvements that are not documented...

Every change in algorithms break the historical development visible in the charts... In with this rendering the whole value useless.
I rather have a consistently slightly wrong reading than a changed algorithm that is killing the whole history.

I can sit there with my heart rate hovering around 46BPM for minutes, and the 'resting' figure is sitting miles higher!

Not to mention it's messed up my stats in Garmin Connect.

Exactly. Anyway, that's even assuming it HAS been improved (clearly it hasn't).

We are now in Version 8.0 and RHR still broken, shame on you guys. Whoever is in charge of this should not be fired, he/she should walk away and hide in Osama Bin Laden's cave.
  • Almost everywhere you search for RHR you get a definition that says that your RHR is your heart rate just after/prior to waking up. Not the lowest heart rate you achieve somewhere being passive during the day. If Garmin changed their algorithm to reflect that, they should communicate that, but if they just give the lowest heart rate they can find during a day, then they're out of sync with a lot of others, and that would make comparing RHR useless.

(Actually that is the reason I measure my RHR with HRV4training ;))

  • But for those who don't wear the watch to bed, the calculation needs to be made during the day. The device shouldn't just be grabbing the first reading it gets when you put it on - for all it knows you could have run up and down several flights of stairs by that point. Grabbing the lowest 60 second average makes way better sense.

And as you mention - changing it suddenly, causing a sudden change to everyone's data is not good. Not explaining the change in logic (ie. what the change is) is also not good.

I wouldn't fire anyone for it though! Mistakes are made. I just hope this gets picked up.
