Navigation Prompts

Back when i first got my Fenix 5 I used the Navigation during a run to guide me around a predefined course which I downloaded to the watch.

At that time, when I was approaching a change in direction, it would show me a number and a direction to turn. I remember it because I couldn;t work out what the number actually represented - it didn't seem to be feet OR metres.

Anyway, that aside, they don't come up at all now. Which is really unhelpful as it means I have to keep the map screen on to follow my routes and I prefer tosee one of my data field screens. It DOES tell me when I have gone off course and back in course, but not the direction markers.

I can't find a way to turn these back on, nor any documentation on this feature.

Am I going crazy or am I missing something?

Thanks,
Matt
  • They're automatically generated for any device that Connect thinks can support them, and are triggered for any course longer then about 1km. Are you seeing elevation correction on your activities in Connect? Just wondering if it is confused about what your watch is.

The activity I ran yesterday is here: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2482247358

Elevation corrections are shown as deisabled by default according to that activity.

When you say they are generated for any device that Connect thinks can support them, do you mean that I need to run with my phone in order for these to be generated?

Or are you saying that when I create a course in Connect, that's where it includes the navigation prompts?

Or, does it insert the navigation prompts when I transfer the course from GCM --> Fenix through the app?

At the monent I tend to do course planning through Strava as its better, then download through Strava Routes CIQ App on the watch. I kind of assumed it worked out the navigation prompts based upon the course as I was following it (I figured all the Strava Routes app does its takes the Strava route and converts it to a Garmin native route).
  • Connect (the server, not the mobile app) inserts the turn alerts when it's sending the course to the device. I haven't used the Strava Routes app so can't comment on that, but it's probably just transferring a GPX file to the watch.

Gotcha. I'll create the course in Connect (I rarely actually use Connect online or the app aside from syncing) and transfer it see if I get the desired behaviour.

    Cheers!

The way I do it and still get the navigation prompts:
    1. Create route on Strava
    2. Export the GPX file
    3. Import the GPX file using garmin connect.
    4. Send to the watch.

    Works perfectly on the fenix5

Yeah it worked from Connect. I assumed that the watch detected the prompts from the file whereas it appears to be inserting them in some way.

I suspect all the Strava Routes CIQ app does is download the GPX file for the device. I'd have thought the CIQ API might have handled this but hey ho.

I considered the way you did it runspiro but it jsut seems to be easier to create the course directly on Connect.

    Cheers for your help!
