Battery life?

Okay Garmin have some REALLY optimistic battery life expectations on the Fenix 5X.
This is my brief experience. Brand new Garmin 5X from major reputable retail outlet, out of the box fully charged this week. No additional widgets, watch faces, apps. Set to gps only and backlight on 20%. There IS an external HRM attached. Went for a 12km run at 11:00am then stopped/stored the run and switched off gps and exited Run mode. By 4:30pm I was on only 74% - WTF? I re-checked - yes gps was OFF. This will not last for a 20hr or even 12hr ultra marathon!

Emailed Garmin but they seem not interested at all by their lack of response...
  • Must be something wrong with your unit. I ran a 12 hour ultra in august, GPS in smartmode and wrist heartrate on. Had almost 50% battery left at the end.
  • I get about 5% per hour. 4 hour ride will take around 20 percentage juice. Don't really touch watch during the rides, rarely use map screen. I don't have notifications and backlight is only on for gestures after dark. 1 sec recording. Would last around 20 hours if I ever found myself riding that long, which hell freezing over would be more likely. :-)

You need more recharging cycles to get out maximum performance of the Li-Ion battery (I understood it was charged only once in your case). The standard discharge for Fenix 5x with switched on GPS (while running or whatever exercise with GPS active) is like 5-6% per hour.
  • 1. With a new watch, charge it to 100%, and let it run down fully, then recharge. That way the guage will know what 0% and 100% is on that battery.
    2. If like most of us with a shiny new watch, you are installing/uninstalling apps and playing with settings to get it set up the way you want, this can leave stray code looping, which uses processor and battery. Powering down the watch and restarting can help clear this.
