Google maps notifications on watch

Hi, yesterday i used google maps on my android phone, and all of a sudden, my watch went crazy! it showed the google maps notifications every couple of seconds: like: 200 meter, 100 meter, and than a street name for example. Now i can't reproduce this situation anymore. Anyone with the same behavior?
  • I don't use android but the the principal is the same: The watch only shows what notifications are sent out from the phone. Example with my setup: If I have Google maps open then the map routing does not produce any notifications as I can see them on the screen. if I "minimize" the mapping screen, Google Maps will send routing notifications to the phone screen (i.e. "Turn left in 500 metres"). These notifications are then also sent to the watch. Bottom line, other than ON/OFF & Always/Only during activities on the watch, all other configurations are handled at the phone level.

In the latest version of Garmin Connect they added the possibility to get notifications from pretty much every app on the phone. They where all enabled by default. Edit the list under Settings -> Smart Notifications in the GC app on the phone.
  • Falken, is this on android? Curious - on IOS it is mostly handled by the phone OS (to control what and how apps send notifications). GC IOS only adds the During Activities/Not during Activities options (and All/Calls Only). In the end, it really comes down to much the same thing - the notification controls for specific apps are handled by the phone not the watch.

Yeah, Android. This just appeared with beta 7.56 (not sure if this is required, but there have been some changes to notifications handling on the watch in recent betas) on the watch and GC v4.2 which came about a day ago. Before that which apps automatically chosen for notifications by GC was handled slightly differently. Just a few apps chosen by default, but you could manually ad. Now all apps are chosen by default and you have to toggle them off. I am guessing the new style might be more in accordance with Android design guidelines or something. The all-apps chosen by default might not be how its intended to be though. We'll see how later versions of GC handle it.
