All I can tell you is 1) they don't come up when you run a course in the reverse direction and 2) the number represents meters to turn in my case where the watch is set to meters.
If you're using imperial units, it's feet to the turn. No idea why they're not working for you - there's no way to turn them off/on, and worked fine for me yesterday. Was it a very short course? Does your watch show in connect with elevation correction turned off, as it should?
