F5x and FR645 Music

When I first got my F5x I was wondering why there was no integrated mp3-player. Why should I take my mobile with me if I could easily connect my bt-headphones to the watch and do have ~5-6GB of free memory for music storage?

Well, I tried to discuss that with garmin but never got an answer.

So imagine how suprised I have been, when I just got the news that the 645 Music is released in Germany. And guess what it's USP is... right, integrated MP3.

Fun Question: Will Garmin update the 5x or do they expect us to buy the 6/5+ one day got get a function that should have been aviable from the first day on?

    My question has always been...

Why in the world would person NOT want to have their phone with them on a workout?

If an emergency happened, wouldn't you want your phone?

They make waist bands that are stretchy and hold a phone so you can't even feel you have it.

Marketing hype if you ask me.

will there be an ituns or Spotify-app to use your streamingservice? How will that sync when the watch is offline eg. phone at home? Or do you have to buy the music drm free to use it on the watch, as the watch wouldn' t be able to play drm-protected music?
Aren' t there headphones that have storage for musicfiles already?

    Marketing hype nails it.
  • I didn't know there were mp3 playing headphones available to buy,a quick Google search revealed to me fully waterproof mp3 integrated headphones, with plenty of music storage.
So is the FR645 redundant already?
  • I really hope Garmin will restrict the useless ipod-like functionality to single product(line). Garmin Fenix is a sports watch, not a music player gadget.

the Fenix 6 will sport music player features FOR SURE
and as soon as you will have the new model on your wirst, you'll be proud of this funcion
and if you don't....well you just can avoid using it
  • I’d rather have the feature than not, and I think with the Fenix being the flagship jack of all trades I reckon it will be an inevitable feature in the future. But perhaps not for the specialist tri watches.

I personally find it refreshing to disappear into the gym a few times a week and leave behind the phone because if I am being honest, I spend too much time on it. Increasingly I’m also seeing more and more people hogging gym equipment as they are updating their social media updates which can be slightly annoying. More importantly I find my focus is better and I have a much better workout as a result if I leave the phone behind because I am not distracted every few minutes. With smart phones getting bigger and bigger it’s nice to have one less thing to carry especially with water bottle, towel, passcards etc. I also have the same mindset when going on a run but I agree that on some activities such as long hikes and rides I will always want my phone with me so would always stream music of that.

  • I have a set of headphones that have 4GB of storage to play .mp3 so if I want music and the ability to leave my phone at home, i already have that. Hopefully Garmin's music provider model will lead to the ability to sync Google Play Music play lists to the watch. That would be something I'd be interested in as managing .mp3 files doesn't really interest me.

I've been really happy with my 5x and will probably not bother upgrading next generation, but i can see having a music option as being useful.

I think it would be a cool feature to have but I'm not going to upgrade to the Fenix 6 or whatever it is just to get it if this feature is included. I currently use a small mp3 player for the gym so this might be nice to have. Don't use music running or cycling outdoors so no big deal there for me.

I would definitely prefer it to my phone though. Personally I never carry my phone on a run unless I have a specific reason to like I'm expecting an important call, same thing goes for a gym workout. Just like BenBristol I like being able to be unreachable for a while and my phone is a pain to run with due to its size. In an emergency like an injury I'll just do what we did before cell phones and flag down a car or another pedestrian for help. The only workouts I do regularly take my phone are bike rides, mostly because I get much further away from home on the bike and it can easily go out of the way in my saddle bag, but I'll usually put it in Do Not Disturb mode then.

I am proud of my race results. I am proud of my kids. But I was and will never be proud of a watch.

I hope it won't. Fenix series are sports watches. Kind of triathlon watch, but also designed for all-day use. Unfortunately, it started being a nice gadget, making some people more cool, by having garmin instead of apple or samsung. And use it going once a week into the gym, and occasionally swimming breaststroke for 30 minutes, each length separated by 5 min talk on the pool side... I really hope Garmin will make a separate product line for all gadget-likers with mp3 and other functions, leaving the fenix series for its original purpose: a sports watch.

Yes, it's a sport watch. And has more important issues than not being able to play music. There are GPS accuracy issues, altimeter issues, BLE/ANT issues etc. many things to be solved before the music. With such issues, its actually for gadget likers. I like the watch, it helps me; but these issues make it more like a toy...
  • Its a sport watch, with music evrybody will cry about the battery.

    100% agree
HR accuracy is horrible -20 beats per minute...
