Hi All, new to the forum :)

Just after some advice if possible.

Ive been interested in the Garmin range of watches for some time now and am considering purchasing the 5X but just have a question, all the info i see online regarding the maps heavily covers the use of hiking etc - im going to disneyland paris in March and hoping to get into the city at some point to have a wonder about. basically im wanting to know if the maps can be used in the city, eg if i get off a train and go for a walk about can i create a breadcrumb to follow to get me back to the train station or are the maps only useable off road for use on hiking trails?

Hope that all makes sense, all info would be greatly appreciated :)
  • That only depends (sometimes) on the used maps, of course you can use the watch the way you were talking about.

    Hi

Yes it can be used in this way

Best way would probably be save location for places you want to get back to and use an app sendpoints for places you want to go to I have tried it and it works fine in saying all that probably not the best option your smart phone would have better signal and bigger screen although walking around looking

At a map on your phone could make you a bit of a target

Thank you both for your replies.

I'm not really concerned about setting places to go to as just plan on going to the tower and probably having a wonder about – just wanted to be able to use the watch to track where wed been so I could then use it to get back to where we started! Obviously id considered just using my phone but like you said it then makes you a bit of a target – with the watch I can just glance at it every so often to make sure were still headed in the right direction.
  • I tried it in Paris last year and the results were not pretty, to the point I found it not worth using. The tall buildings and narrow streets just killed the GPS. If you're in a part of the city with good sky coverage you might be ok.
  • I live in Paris and got a 5X.
Don't forget the city is made of "canyons" where GPS sometimes can be lost.
But I have found in many trips, the last being in Cambridge UK, how useful a wrist GPS can be. I have used the road magnet option to avoid any zig zag.
Also the 5X is bringing a lot of informations for the weather and also a compass and the time of the sunset.
I find it very handy, even in a city.
    Cheers

Thanks ikim1967 – its hard to say if what I want it for when I'm there will work as its been many many many years since I last went there so will literally be like its my first time. I'm sure most of the areas we would be going would be quite open but who knows.

Thanks NemoSandman, that’s my line of thinking on it – there have been many times we've been out where a wrist GPS would have been great, something especially that I only really have to press a button or 2 to get started – not like unlocking my phone, searching for an app then starting it to track a journey! Do you find it works well round the areas of the Eiffel Tower as that’s likely where would head to as the kids want to see it – I don’t know what that area is like, is it majorly built up or quite open? What are you referring to with the road magnet and zigzag??

    Thanks
  • Anyone has installed Talkytoaster maps Italy Apennines on Fenix 5X?

  • This will be the zig zag and that - just losing tracking. Will jump streets, buildings and anything else. I haven't tried the road lock which might help. You'll be ok round the Eiffel Tower - fairly open. Just down town with the tall buildings and very narrow sky view.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1290919.png
