I appreciate this is a subjective question, because each person will have their own opinion: Is there any technical benefit of positive over negative, or vice versa?
I.e. Effects on the long term display integrity, battery usage.
Do you mean white background vs black? There won't be an impact on battery for "screen wear" for either. When it comes to places where you have options, it's really just a matter of what you find best in your conditions.
White background tends to be more visible, both in sunny and night conditions (with light on). So I would prefer it for activities, Black looks better for when not in activities (imho).
In both cases it is a matter of personal preference though.
