Garmin Definition of Floors?

Hi,

The F5X has some akward floor counting...sometimes it works sometime it won't.

Today I definitively climb more than 10 floors... the F5X only counted 2.

When you climb stairs...you need to run to count?
Do indoor floor counting work? (Not GPS based?)
What is the minimum height of a floor?

I hope it's not based on the Altimeter data since mine never read the same value when I go at the same floor.

I'm on 7.10 but when I purchased it two months ago it was on 6.xx and didn't really work.

Thanks!
Laurent
  • Floors are based on a 10'/3m (appx) change in elevation based on the altimeter data. There are other variables involved, such as the speed and "steps", to eliminate things like riding an an elevator. There is a walking bridge over a busy street where I live, and both sides have both a ramp and and stairs, and is maybe 25' above the road. If I take the stairs, I get 1-2 floors. If I take the ramp, I don't get floors. Same change in elevation, but different times involved. Holding on to the stair railing with the arm I have the watch on also has an impact.
  • The Garmin definition of a floor also requires that you be swinging your arm. Bad luck if you are holding the railing, or carrying something in your watch hand.
  • You can't rely on floors count. And in the "Floor climb" app, it's even worst.I do train everyday by climbing stairs from my house(i have a house with 1 floor) and i have to say that the watch does not even count the floors. At least "he" do that only when it want.It does not matter if i moving my hands or i am climbing stairs with a particular peace. The watch does not want to count every floor and that's all. It's very frustrating because you want to climb 20 floors and after you've climbed 20 floors and then look at the watch, it will show you a random number. Most of the time it show you less. For example i have to climb 50-60 floors to reach 20 floors goal. And i saw the altimeter value does not change after i climb one floor, for example.Again, i have to say that the watch it does not work how it has to be, and i am disapointed that i've paid a lot of money for a watch that it is not good in counting floors at least. Not to say that it have a software full of bugs....
