Get the Fenix 5 or hold off for Fenix 6(?)

I'm wondering if anyone can give me any feedback on whether i should get the 5 or get the Fenix 3 and wait for the new watch?
I'm currently using an AW Sport S2 but I'm tired of the battery life and fiddling with the touch at the end of workouts.
I've decided to go back to Garmin(previously owned a F3 HR Sapphire) but i can't decide if i should get a used F3 Sapphire(~300EUR) and wait for the next Fenix watch, maybe one's coming out spring 2018?
Or should i just get the Fenix 5? It's 470-560EUR(used-new, sapphire) but if the new watch is just around the corner i'd rather wait for that one.
  • Best to hold off for the Polar V800 replacement.
Garmin products are pretty much junk these days compared to Wahoo or Polar. I deeply regret selling my V800 as it was by far the most accurate watch I've owned.
Right now I'm on a Fenix 5 Saphire and yeah it has a lot of features...but how many of them work as described?

My Fenix 3 worked very well and i was satisfied with it, kinda regret that i sold it. Not really interested in Polar.
What features doesn't work as you want them to?
  • The F5 was announced at CES in early January 2017 - it might be worth holding off just a few weeks to see if an F5 Plus is announced there. I think the biggest recognized problem with the F5 is that there are ANT+ reception problems with SOME sensors (eg. STRYD, Stages power meter), although many other sensors seem to work properly. The Forerunner 935 has the identical feature set as the F5, but none of the ANT+ problems.
  • Another argument for waiting is the low level of discounts available, at least in the UK/ Eur. I'm looking at the F5 silver and the best discount is 10%.

Either the F5 plus will trigger a sale or you'll have something with more functionality for nearly the same money. Although bear in mind, if announced at CES it may not be available til June.

V800 replacement may not cover the Outdoor/looks aspect of the Fenix so not sure about that one.
  • I would expect the fenix 6/5+ shown at CES (delivered in april) have only the following features compared to fenix 5:
    - Garmin Pay (NFC)
    - Improved ANT+ antenna (without Garmin ever speak about it, it will only behave better)
    - Wifi on complete product line.
    - Some new band/color combinations.

I expect this to be a minor update and expect CES 2019 to have a new updated product with new smaller HW and next generation of processor compatible with connectIQ 3.x.

It could of course also add also onboard music with "classic bluetooth" similar to the "Forerunner 645 Music" that was even shown on garmins page a couple of weeks ago.
  • I have had the Fenix 5 since the day it was released. Since then I have trained for, and run, two half marathons, two marathons and a 50k ultra. The F5 has been the best watch I have owned (Apple watch and several Suunto and Garmin watches previously). I used Stryd with no problems and no dropouts. I enjoy the watch more when I stay away from this forum. The 935 is the same watch at a lower price and lighter weight. I think I would have preferred it if it had been available at the time. In any case, how much do you want to use the watch between now and the time when a future, unannounced, replacement arrives? Should you then wait for the F7? I plan to run another 1000 miles before the F6, or whatever, comes out and I will enjoy the F5 until I sell it and upgrade. Is it perfect? No. It is just the best watch I have ever had.
  • Agreed. And Garmin usually only has major updates every other year, so other than something incremental, Garmin 6 won't likely arrive until 2019.

Depends on your usage. I would go for the Fenix 5 for the better optical HR and newer connect IQ support.
Other than that, I can't really say anything bad about the Fenix 3 (for activity tracking or smartwatch use), apart from reduced battery life due to age.

The fenix 6 will probably not be announced before the end of 2018. I would expect a special edition sometime after the summer. I would go for the the 5 and skip the 6.

  • Thanks for all your input. I bought the Fenix 5 Sapphire!
  • Just got an email from Garmin highlight three things they'll be "unveiling" at CES - none of which is a new Fenix. Not proof that there won't be a new model but not looking likely.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1292908.jpg
