Treadmill App Elevation Question

Hello all, I recently noticed that I am not getting elevation recorded in my treadmill activities. I haven't run on a treadmill in several months, but this week i'm traveling and noticed that the elevation graph is not showing up in Garmin Connect as it once was. Can anyone confirm that they see the same thing?
  • Elevation data on a treadmill? I just checked and yes, there is. But obviously a constant value throughout the run, the exact height I was at, when running on the treadmill.

Never heard that a treadmill could report back elevation data to the watch.
  • The watch is recording it through the altimeter/barometer. While i generally don't care about elevation on a treadmill session, it is nice to help remember if i was running in Denver at a mile high or houston at sea level. I'm a little concerned that my watch WAS recording this data and is no longer.
  • Ok, got your point. Checked my indoor activities and also a friend of mines and now it is clear: starting with firmware v7.0.0 there is no elevation data being displayed in GC for indoor workouts (treadmill runs, strength trainings, cardio activities). Not saying that the data is not in the recording, I don't know.

I would put the location in the notes or title of your activity.
  • I confirmed with the Garmin beta team that this functionality was intentionally removed.
  • Thanks for the info. Nothing on the changelog for v7.00.

While they are at it: recording the temperature from watch on indoor activity is also pretty useless.
  • I think taking either of them out is pretty dumb if they were not causing other issues. Both have some use in certain applications. Like the difference in RPE, calories etc between Denver and Boston if you travel and want to know what happens at higher or lower altitudes and temp if you are sensitive to variations or, want to simulate warm weather training indoors. I am sure there are others. This assumes they are accurate and certainly temp seems a bit flaky on my 5X. Just sayin'
  • I have a tempe on my shoe, so i'd rather they not take that data away. I don't particularly like that they took away elevation either. I can add the info into the notes, but that is a step that would be unnecessary if they just left the app alone. If they are looking to improve treadmill running, figuring out how to get pace to be more stable would be a priority. I know that my running form is all sorts of different on a treadmill, but i can go for long periods of time without adjusting the belt (not saying it doesn't change a little on its own) and have wildly varying pace.
  • What happens if you use the Run Indoor App? I'm not sure of the behavior differences between Treadmill and Run Indoors. The F3 only has Run Indoor and doesn't natively have the Treadmill App. Run Indoors is interpreted by Connect as Treadmill although I use Run Indoors periodically but it's never on a treadmill. Run Indoors will capture altimeter data (at least on the F3). I just don't know what treadmill features you would lose (if any) if you used Run Indoors instead.
  • Sure, temperature recorded from tempe is ok. I was writing about the nonsense temperature data the watch on the wrist records. This is my body temperature - x degrees.

Regarding pace/distance I can strongly recommend a footpod.
  • It is a bit sad that Garmin is so behind - and Apple is taking the lead on indoor Gym integration :( Here features are taken away - while Apple Watch users are getting synchronised data from Gym devices so speed/incline etc is transferred to their watches.

I love my Fenix - but I would have liked Garmin to be the integration leader with indoor gym stuff.

Apple is running quite fast on all things health related and when they start having better battery life they will become a real contender.
