How does the watch know there is a software update for data apps, etc

The watch doesn't know. Garmin Connect takes care of that.

Garmin Connect on the phone right? It never told me of a data field update. I had to uninstall it and install the update data field app. Wonder if there is a setting?

Sometimes works better with Express on the computer, especially when the permissions on an app change.

Garment Connect Mobile for iOS tells you an app update is available, but GCM/Android doesn't.

Last I heard though, is if you did it on iOS, all your settings for the updated app get reset.

Yes I dont think I never see any update of my app on Android.

When I plug my F5 into the PC, I can see the update is available on GE.

Yea update management sucks, the Wifi version of the watch should just be able to get them on their own, just like the firmware updates. Needing to rely on a PC is annoying.
