What does Resting HR setting do?

Hi guys,

In Settings > User Profile > Heart Rate > Resting HR I put it on Use Average but it gets reset to -- every few hours. Does this setting influence anything, such as Intensity Minutes?

Thanks!

What is resting heart rate? Usually resting heart rate and max hear rate are used to calculate heart rate zones. Your resting heart rate is like when you just woke up or are laying on the couch watching TV. Your max heart rate is when you've been exercising for a while and then really push yourself.

Usually, the more fit you, are the lower your resting heart rate is. Also, the time it takes for your heart rate to drop once at max takes less time.
Some marathoners and stuff can have a resting heart rate in the 25-45 range... if they were a bear they'd be hibernating for the winter.

Heart rate zones are then calculated based on percentages of your maximum. The theory is at different heart rate zones you can burn more fat or increase aerobic/inaerobic fitness.

I usually use heart rate zone running programs if I can't figure out how to pace myself- like with trail running since I'm going up and down hills and stuff. Flat ground running is easier to get an idea on your pace per mile but not as easy with hills and rocks messing up your cadence. If I am going up a hill at a snail's pace but my heart rate is in zone 5, I just take it as I'm doing enough so I don't feel bad about my speed. Or if I'm trucking along on flat ground but I'm in zone 3 I could probably pick up my pace since I'm not really trying as hard as I could.

It's just a funner alternative to pacing yourself instead of just going for speed. You start noticing what your heart rate probably is after a while.

I'd either set it at average or just put in what your watchi says when you wake up in the morning.

... and then try a running program that uses heart rate zones. I'm sure the watch will beep or vibrate or something as you run to indicate when you move from zone to zone as your heart rate goes up and down to tell you when you can speed up or slow down once you reach the zone you want to work at.
  • RHR is really only used if you set your HR zones using the Heart Rate Reserve method. (HRR = MHR minus RHR). RHR is referenced in calculating the trigger point for intensity minutes, but the effect will be pretty small.

Thank you, that's what I thought!

Hei, as I reported in the thread I linked below, setting the resting heart rate on the watch is getting overridden by garmin connect settings. So if you want to change resting heart rate you need to set it up on your garmin connect on your phone.

Where do I do this in Garmin Connect? I can't find the option to set resting heart rate.

you can only set it in carmin connect if you select to use %HRR under the heart rate zones.
