Unreliable Turn-by-Turn Notifications

I'm using courses to navigate me through unknown terrain and love the turn-by-turn notifications from the fenix 5: but they are not always shown.

Is there a way to find out when they can be used an when not? Is there a reason when it's working and when not?

Testszenarios:

Created the Couse directly in Garmin Connect: seems to work
Used the komoot-connect-iq app to load the course from komoot onto the fenix: is not working
Import a gpx from another tool to Garmin Connect: seems to work sometimes
  • Worth a shot. Might also be worth checking the value in the pace calculator is reasonably close to your running pace - I think it uses this to estimate when to give the advance warning of the upcoming turn.
  • Connect had a glitch a while back where the alerts were very late because the distance stamps were wrong on the coursepoints, but I think that's fixed now. My usual route is using ridewithgps and converting its tcx output to a fit file; I get the warning of a turn ahead before the turn, and the turn alert itself usually a few seconds late, as or just after I've made the turn, but not 30-40 metres late. What's the GPS visibility like where you're running? It does seem to alert later with tall buildings or heavy tree cover degrading the GPS quality.

MM82, it just sounds as though the course file doesn't actually have any coursepoints, which is odd as komoot are pretty clear about having TBT. If I've understood correctly, komoot transfers a course file onto your watch and then it is navigated by the watch in the same way as a Garmin file would be - is that right? If so, can you try to retrieve one of the komoot courses from your watch so we can disassemble it and look for coursepoints?

is a course imported via the komoot-connect-iq app. What am I looking for? is the same couse, only exported from komoot as gpx and imported into garmin connect, then pushed to the watch: I can see the different size, guess this could be the waypoints...
  • MM, I've used one of the tools in the FIT SDK to convert both your courses to .csv files.
There are no coursepoints in 5009, the komoot import. The difference in file size is partly that, partly that there are more trackpoints in the gpx converted file, partly that the gpx converted file has speed and enhanced speed data for each trackpoint and the komoot file doesn't (they are not necessary - if you have time and distance for the trackpoints anyway, speed is redundant).
The coursepoints in the gpx version are being added by Connect when you export it AFAIK.
  • I did a 200 km ride over the weekend, and had no problems with TBT. Although as others have noted, while the early warning of a turn works correctly, the actual turn seems late - I assume that is because I am usually taking the inside or outside line through the turn, while the GPS assumes the middle of the intersection, so I don't actually pass over the turn point.

Exported a tcx file from ridewithgps.com, and imported that into Garmin Connect Courses, then sent the course to my watch
  • I had time now for some tests and came to following conclusions:
Direct komoot import simply does not give you turn by turn navigation
Import from connect works sometimes: I had the issue, that the watch stopped giving me infos mid-run: seemd it stopped processing waypoints/coursepoints: even the elevation-screen was flat and not showing any info. after restarting the navigation it worked.

So it seems to be a little buggy... hopefully this will get more stable in the future.
  • Are the connect downloads recent? There was a bug at one point where it was calculating the wrong distance on trackpoints, which messed up the elevation display completely. But you say it worked after restarting the navigation, so maybe that's not the problem.

  • Yes, I've just loaded the courses from Garmin Connect. Maybe I will find a course one day, where this is reproduceable and come back to this issue.

There are a few settings that have a side effect on whether or not the turn notifications occur. If you press the start button and scroll to Navigate, then press and hold the menu button and open Navigate Settings -> Routing…
For "Activity," if this is set to a foot-based setting (Hike, Walk, Run, etc.) you will not see a notification pop up when you are supposed to make a turn. You will hear the same beep that accompanies a turn notification, but we assume that for these types of activities the customer has time to look at their map and determine which direction to go. However, if the Activity setting is set to Cycling, etc; you will receive turn notifications.

Below Activity, you’ll see “Courses.” If this is set to “Follow Course” the watch won’t give directions unless they are present in the course fit file. If you created the course on the watch (rather than Basecamp/Connect,) then directions are not added, so under the Follow Course setting you will not see turn notifications. However, if this setting is changed to “Use Map” then the you will see turn notifications because the course is recalculated to follow the specified points but follow the map installed on the watch. Again, these notifications are dependent on the Activity setting you use, as explained above.

So I was describing the settings that are accessed via the Navigate app. Say you were following a course under the Run app. Here, the “Activity” setting defaults to a foot-based setting, so you would not see turn notifications. But the Cycling app would show them. Additionally, in the settings for all of these profiles that use GPS (Run, Hike, Bike, etc) you can access the “Activity” and “Courses” settings described above. Meaning that each application’s Routing settings can be set individually, so you could theoretically set Hike to “Use Map” and Run to “Follow Course” and create a copy of the Run app and personalize the copy to “Use Map.”

I am not sure about the Komoot app, as this is a CIQ app and not native to the device, their settings may vary. Hopefully the above information if helpful.

    Thanks,

  • odsweng Thanks for this information: but unfortunately the settings you are talking about are not present on the fenix 5 / v 6.00 (d376ccb). The only thing remotely sounding the same could be the navigationtype "bearing" or "course". Are you talking about a future version or an old one? It would be great to make this more transparent: ie a setting "show turn notification" would be helping much, since I would even like to get turn by turn navigation while running (so I don't need to check the map and guess my current direction: esp. while trailrunning this can be quite tricky...)
  • I think he may be talking about the 5x, and we're talking about the 5...
