Unreliable Turn-by-Turn Notifications

I'm using courses to navigate me through unknown terrain and love the turn-by-turn notifications from the fenix 5: but they are not always shown.

Is there a way to find out when they can be used an when not? Is there a reason when it's working and when not?

Testszenarios:

Created the Couse directly in Garmin Connect: seems to work
Used the komoot-connect-iq app to load the course from komoot onto the fenix: is not working
Import a gpx from another tool to Garmin Connect: seems to work sometimes
  • Are you testing using very short courses - say 1km or less? If so, use longer ones. Never used komoot, no idea about that.
  • The only problem that I found with the courses is that the notifications are usually out by circa 34-40mtrs - I get the instruction to turn after I had made the turn.

The courses are usually between 10 and 30k: so distance should not be an issue.

How do you create the courses: do you also import them from a gpx or create them in garmin connect?

Not the short issue, then. What is happening, exactly? Do you find they work for a while, then suddenly stop during a course? Or do they just not work at all for some courses?

I noticed the same thing when I tried running with a route last week. Super strange and not very useful.

The course is loading, the map is drawn and I get the notification, that I'm on track. Then I only see how far it is to the finish-line, no turn notifications: and no, the course is not a straight line ;)

I am creating the route on Garmin Connect. I do use a footpod and have it set for distance always so I might try changing it to "indoor" and use the GPS for distance outside and see if that makes a difference.
  • Connect had a glitch a while back where the alerts were very late because the distance stamps were wrong on the coursepoints, but I think that's fixed now. My usual route is using ridewithgps and converting its tcx output to a fit file; I get the warning of a turn ahead before the turn, and the turn alert itself usually a few seconds late, as or just after I've made the turn, but not 30-40 metres late. What's the GPS visibility like where you're running? It does seem to alert later with tall buildings or heavy tree cover degrading the GPS quality.

MM82, it just sounds as though the course file doesn't actually have any coursepoints, which is odd as komoot are pretty clear about having TBT. If I've understood correctly, komoot transfers a course file onto your watch and then it is navigated by the watch in the same way as a Garmin file would be - is that right? If so, can you try to retrieve one of the komoot courses from your watch so we can disassemble it and look for coursepoints?

GPS visibility is good (no tall buildings and a few light trees at the side of the road) maybe I should rewrite the course and see if the update/fix works for me too?
