Running activity paused without reason / gps not plotted / step not counted

Hello
I have some problems with my Fenix 5 since few weeks (beginning of october I think). I don't know if they are all linked :
- during activity (trail running), without any action from myself, the watch show the blue garmin logo for few seconds, then activity is paused and the screen proposing to resume/save is shown. I precise that auto-pause is desactivated. The result is that my activity total time is very less that my actual run time :-(
- during this activity, steps are not counted in my daily total, as they were before
- and finally, gps track is not plotted (not showned in garmin connect, nor Strava) as it was before. However, total distance shown is correct
Is is a software bug ? An hardware issue ? I'm using 6.0.0.
Thanks !
Regards

Stéphane
  • Hello Stephane

I used to have a similar issue with my fenix3 when the RAM of the watch was being used to the max. It would reboot itself to clear the RAM.

Are you using any custom datafields? It could be that there is a memory leak causing this to happen. I would suggest removing all custom datafields then adding them back one at a time to try find the culprit.

I have not yet seen this happen on my fenix5 and I've had it since May.

    Hello Pete,

    Thanks for your answer.
Actually I was not using custom data field, only one watch face (and I test without)
I think I've found the main reason of the problem. The watch can't get GPS signal... I used to start activity anyway, but the watch never catch the gps. The live track on watch creen during activity is not drawned. And maybe that's why after around 10 mins it sometimes reboot or suspend activity ? I didn't notice it before, as global distance and current speed seemed correct, but I think now it was only the accelerometer datas...
I've try to restore factory default, test 6.75, rollback to 6.00, test with no custom face watches, with no sync with my account, let the watch search for GPS for a long time... nothing works. GPS stay red
I think I'll ask for an exchange, except if someone has an idea !
    Thks

  • Stephane,

The GPS satellites drift slightly in their orbits, which can lead to GPS errors. However, the GPS signal includes data on this drift and the watch can correct for it, but it can take a while download this data. Without this correction data, an initial position fix can take a lot longer to acquire.

I'd suggest going to an open area with a good view of the horizon, and trying to acquire a GPS signal there for 5-10 minutes. Once the watch has this correction data, it should be a lot easier to get a quick GPS fix when starting an activity. Once you have this, you should only need to do this again if you haven't used the GPS for a while or have moved a significant distance (eg. 100km or more) since your last fix.

If you can't get a GPS fix in 10 minutes even in an open position, then you should be contacting Garmin for an exchange.
