Assioma/Watteam and Fenix 5?

A couple of the newer entrants into the power meter market have brought PM's into the realm of affordability, and I'm keen to get some of the benefits of training with power. But I'm a little cautious given the issues surrounding the F5 and Stages with the ANT+ and BLE issues.

Does anyone have any experience using the Favero Assiomas or Watteam's Powerbeat PMs with a Fenix 5?
  • Here's what I got from Watteam on the Powerbeat when I demonstrated that their PM worked fine with an Edge 520 and had significant dropouts on the Fenix5:

"We thank you for the detailed mailed and video.
After reviewing all the data from your case, we see that the POWERBEATTm is working great for you, and you are getting all of the data via Edge 520.
The POWERBEAT communicates the same data to your head unit and to your watch. If you can not get proper display on your watch, we apologize but we are not able to help."

They were very courteous but they took a lot of my time trying things. In the end, they offered a refund.

To be fair, the problem seems to be with the Fenix5 overall.
  • I was curious the same thing about Assioma. BePro works very well with Fenix 5, but on the Max power transmit setting. Unfortunately, this setting is not available for Assioma.
Unfortunately, known bloggers and testers somehow didn't want to test the devices with F5 (of course, we cannot expect it from them). DCR said, he probably made one ride with F5, and cannot remember it has dropouts or not...

I would really appreciate some Assioma user to confirm it working with F5 or not...
  • Fred - thanks for posting your experience with the Powerbeats. I had heard good things about Watteam's customer service - pity Garmin's doesn't match. That's a bit of a downer that they don't work with the F5, because $400 for double sided power was a VERY attractive price.

Like wojtek, if anyone can post of their experience with the Assioma's and the F5, i'd be appreciative.
  • So to answer my own question, I have been running Assioma Uno (single sided) with my F5 since November over ANT+, and have had no problems. It picks up the PM just as fast as my HRM-RUN and speed sensor at the start of a ride, and I haven't seen any problems with dropouts.

Hoping to upgrade to the double sided version when the budget permits.

Thanks for the update. This is exactly the thread I need as I'm thinking of the Assioma Duo. A question if I may. Where are you viewing your power chart? The power chart from my Stages looks great on GC on the phone but when I look at the same chart on my computer I can see drop outs. Thanks.
  • Good point. I am really going by the watch, and that I am not seeing drops in the 3s power output that aren't correlated to pedalling (eg. coasting while cornering, or negotiating traffic) at the time.

But your question did prompt me to look more closely at the graphs. I attach the power file (computer not phone) from a ride I did yesterday - I did my warm-up riding to the velodrome, and thinking carefully about my route, there were certainly traffic lights, turns and traffic where I would have been coasting with a power output of zero, and you can see that in the graph. But you can also see 3 solid 5 minute threshold intervals that were the core of my workout where I would have been on the power continously, with no dropouts.

Thanks, that is awesome news. Until I read a post on this forum I thought my F5 was recording everything, I then checked my power chart on my computer and I could see the drop outs. I have attached a pic from my F5 power chart and from the same ride the power chart from my Edge 1000. Now you have provided me with this great news it's favero assiamo duo for me. Thanks, again for checking I really appreciate it.

  • Wow - that is an ugly chart. I'd heard bad reports of the Stages with the F5, so I am glad I stayed well clear. As the Assioma was my first PM, I wasn't quite sure how a dropout showed up. But certainly I haven't seen anything like what is in your chart.

Mcalista, where you found this price for double? I thought it was USD 800...
  • Mcalista, on which side have you installed the Watteam uno, right or left? and where do you keep your F5 when on a bike: left hand or on the bike bar (right side or left). I am asking as I noticed that it matters re connectivity, quite a lot. So my point is that if you are using for example the watch on left hand and the power meter on the right arm that the Dual could work.
