No Cycling VO2 (Vectors are paired to fenix and I have a HR monitor)

Guys,

I cannot get a cycling VO2.

Setup:
I have the vector 1.
Software is up to date
Vectors are connected to my Fenix 5
Power data is being shown / updated / captured

I am using a Scosche HR monitor
It is paired to the fenix 5 as well

I am training indoors on a trainer.

Fenix 5 is up to date

I have never been able to get a cycling VO2. I am able to get running VO2 (granted I haven't run outside in ages)

Thoughts?
  • The only thing I can think of is that it doesn't like your Scosche HR monitor? Did you get your running VO2 max while using the Scosche?
The manual says you should be able to get a VO2 max estimate using the F5 optical HR or a compatible Ant+ Chest strap. In theory the Scosche should be fine but maybe it doesn't like it? Perhaps do a trial using the wrist based HR and see if that gives you an estimate?

The other thing the manual states is that you need to do a steady high intensity ride of at least 20 minutes?
  • Guys,

I spoke to Garmin support and they said that in order to get a Cycling VO2 max I need

    - Power Meter
    - HR
    - 20 minute+ exercise
    - GPS <---------------this one is not listed in the instructions.
    - exercise needs to be set to bike (not indoor bike - as I will have to be outside as well)

I hope that helps anyone else solve their problems

    Jmurenzo,

Thank you for posting Garmins response here. I´m not sure what to think now, because I did two 10 minutes indoor test-rides at my local gym just to see if my Fenix 5 would connect through the INDOOR BIKE -app to the Body Bike and get power recorded. It did, and immediately gave me a cycling V02max of 46 which differs from my running V02max of 43 (I´m a healthy non-obese 41 year old desk-jockey, haven´t exercised for years)

But I´ve only tried this once...maybe that V02 cycling nr won´t get updated from now on. Any others have experience from using the Indoor-bike app with a powermeter. Did you get a V02max?
  • Garmin told you wrong. I have no powermeter on my outdoor bike. So no VO2max outdoors. Correct.

But my indoor bike on my trainer which provides power data is reporting VO2max data with the indoor biking app.
  • back to the drawing board. I'll call garmin again later this week to see if they have better advice

    I'm in a similar situation
using a Tacx Vortex Smart Trainer with Trainer Road
and my Fenix 5 saphire linked for the heart rate

not got a single reading for V02max on the bike - no session is less than an hour
I don't have a power meter on the bike so not sure if this will also be a problem when I eventually get back out on the road (I use a Garmin Edge 820 with a giant cadence sensor)

all my runs update the running vo2max via the watch data

    any suggestions ?

as per Fred Rost's post above, try using the Bike Indoor app, rather than the Bike app.
  • I've got a similar issue. Garmin Fenix 3, latest firmware, PowerTap G3 on the bike outdoors, switch wheels to a non PT hub on the CompuTrainer. No Vo2 Max showing up for cycling since January 2018. I have been training twice a week on the CompuTrainer (Zwift Trial and TrainerRoad) and once a week outdoor for the last 6 weeks, but Connect is not showing Training Effect for my indoor rides (which have HR, Power, Speed and Cadence in the .FIT file and all show up in Connect when analysing the activity) but only my outdoor rides are showing in Training Effect reports, and my 7 day and 4 week VO2 Max (Cycling) report has no data.
  • I found a solution - I deleted the VO2Max numbers in my user settings for Cycling in Garmin Connect - removed the numbers so that it just showed dashes. I have ridden since, and a realistic VO2 Max number is now showing on my watch and in GC.
  • No VO2Max cycling here neither no matter the parameter I tried!

I had a nice running VO2Max before but had to stop because of knee problem.
I stayed idle for a few mounths then I decided to try mountain bike cycling but never got a VO2Max.
I tried the solution of BernardMaughan but without success...
If somebody has other ideas I'm all ears !
