My problem with Fenix 5 and firmware V6.71: HR works only the first 6 min and after 18 min correctly. Sports equipment: Stepper. See HR-photo. Changing position of Fenix is no solution. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1260337.png

    Hi,
I have the same problem that the HR is dropping after the first couple of minutes and is accurate for running only after 20min. For Weight Lifting it is even worth. This wrist HR is not close to be realistic. In my Gym exercise I did a warm up run and cool down run, but my HR during the weight lifting is shocking. Sometimes around 60 BPM where it should be around 150-160 BPM. I am using a EMS suite during this training where I can't use a chest HR belt.

During the day without an activity the HR rate looks reasonable to me. Any suggestions???

  • You can't use wrist based optical heart rate tracking for weight sessions. This isn't a problem with the Fenix 5 - it's a known limitation of ALL wrist based heart rate trackers.
If you wan't accurate heart rate tracking for these sorts of activities then you need to have a chest strap for best results or something like the Scosche armband that I mention below.

I don't use a stepper, but I'm pretty sure you have to hold some bars with your hands correct? That will also impact the heart rate tracking because your wrist will be flexing constantly (just like when doing weights) and this makes it difficult for the optical tracker to get a good lock on your blood flow, which is how it measures your heart rate.

You won't get any firmware updates that will make this much better because it's a physical limitation.

holgerschuetz - you mention you can't use a chest strap right now. You could look at trying a Scosche Rhythm armband. It's an optical heart rate tracker, but because you wear it further up your arm it is meant to be better for gym workouts/high intensity exercise. I haven't tried on myself but there's plenty of positive reviews both in these forums and on google.
