Successor to the Fenix 5X

It has literally taken me two years to pull the trigger on a smart watch. I ordered a Fenix 5X Sapphire yesterday for $659.99.

Good call or is there a better successor to the 5X coming soon for the same money that I should have waited on?

It stung a little to spend that much on a watch but I can't wait to get it. EVERYTHING that I have ever read about the 5X says it is hands down the best on the market.
  • Some would argue that the FR935 is a better watch, I am on my second 5x (upgraded from a F3HR a month ago and already had my first 5x replaced under warranty because of the cable issue... which btw is still an issue).

I will be waiting to see what the new gold connector watches are like and if I have to I will RMA this unit again.

However, I love the Fenix range, I moved from an Apple Watch to the F3HR and have no regrets what so ever.
  • Its a great watch for all its flaws - if the GPS could match some of the other devices (like the 935) and the cable worked properly, I couldn't be more please. The battery life just blows me away! I sure there will be newer models and a 6 at some point in the future but this one will keep you going for quite a while!
  • Historically it is ~2yrs between successive models. The 5's came out last spring, so you should be good for another 1.5 yrs!

Well it's not a "smart watch" in many respects. There are lots of things that an Apple Watch can do (even the original) that a 5X can't. It's a much better fitness device than even the AW3, though. So the 5X is probably the best fitness oriented watch on the market, and it's the watch I'd get if my Epix ever dies, but it can't hold a candle to an AW3 (currently on my wrist, about be left home when I go out on my MTB with my Edge 1000) as a smart watch. If you bought it for fitness related things (not just "step counting"), pairing to sensors, recording activities, navigation, etc., then you've made an excellent choice. You'll be disappointed if you just wanted a "smart watch".
  • My main requirement was 100m water resistance, so there's only one smart watch that I considered as an alternative to my 5X, the Nixon Mission. As an Android Wear watch, the Mission has more capability (like being able to answer texts or even place calls while my phone is in my pocket) and it's also less expensive, but the battery life is reportedly very poor. I've only had the 5X for a couple of days, but I'm pleased with it so far.
