Hill waypoints in courses

I'm new to using navigation on the Fenix 5X and could use help trying to figure something out that I think the watch can do.

I have been using routeCourse to generate courses for my road bike rides. I paid for the app so I can see elevation during the ride. I would like to add waypoints (or some sort of trigger) to the top of hills in the course so that when riding, when I start to climb a hill, the auto climb will kick in and jump to a screen that shows two fields: 1) Distance to Waypoint 2) Vertical ascent to waypoint.

Basically When I ride a hill, I want to be able to look down and see I have 0.73 miles to go and 452 feet of elevation remaining until I get to the top.

Is there any way to do this?
  • There is no such option.
But it's good to see I'm not the only saying it's a basic missing feature.

Hi guys... I have the same desire of mcelbo... During a trail running course I want to see the information about ETE of next waypoint or Distance to the next wp.
I use routecourse too and dynamicwatch to create GPX route.
I create a GPX Route with waypoint but when I start my course with routecourse the data field about Distance to the next waypoint (Time to Next) is blank :-(
How can I have that information during a navigation or courses?
I can't think that this is a basic missing feature.
During a trail running it's very important to know the distance from me and next wp that could be a refreshment.

Anyone can help us about this ?

    tnx Enrico
  • Hi Guys,

One way of doing it is by creating "clue points" with another softwares (ridwithgps, gpsies, ST3) that usually generate .tcx files and than converting them to .fit file using an app created by an user called Macbadger called CourseTCX2FIT.

    Regards,

  • Just be careful with names.
At my knowledge there are four types of "points":
    1) trackpoints ; points that form a trak
    2) waypoints : points of interest, etc, but not attached to the track
    3) coursepoints: like trackpoints but used o tcx files in order to allow Virtual Partner type of application and basic navigation WITHOUT TBT (turn by turn) directions/instructions
    4) cluepoints: this is what you need for your hill point, left, right, water, etc, whatever point you want to include in a TBT navigation. TCX files for devices that support it but Fenix series that require FIT files

  • Interesting, I did just know three of them.
    1. Track/gps-points. Forms a track as you a say.
    2. Waypoints. Separate poi, not connected to a track, but can be put in a list in a gpx file and be followed as a track. I suppose this waypoints also can be of the type as a TBT.
    3. Course points. Points on track that can be anything, for instance TBT (left, right...), hills, shelter...

anyone with more knoledge that can clarify?

    I do have.
Waypoints cannot be used as TBT.
You can have thousands of coursespoints in a "track/course" but e.g. the F3 only 50 cluepoints for TBT are perceived. I still don´t know the number for the F5x.

    Hi Marcossaad,
I have followed your indication... so with GPSIES I obtained a fit files with some Cluepoints in my track. Sorry but how can upload the fit files into my Garmin Fenix 5x ?
I attached it into my pc by USB and I copy the fit file into Garmin\Courses folder of the watch but I don't know if this it's the correct way.
    Thank you for response

  • You need to copy it to the Newfiles folder for the watch to detect it.

    Hi,

For the Fenix 3 and Fenix5 family properly work with TBT you have to generate first a .tcx file and than converting it to a .fit file using an app called CourseTCX2FIT created by Macbadger.
After that as Subtleguru mentioned you have to copy it to the Newfiles folder.

    Regards,
  • Tested out Ridewithgps with the McBadger tool today and it works beautifully. Now I can use all my RidewithGps routes on the 5x showing course points.
But I think Garmin should add support for tcx-files so we wouldn’t have to do this converting step.

Now if we could only get
    - a Cue sheet data-screen option like the on the Edge (see attached picture - example)
    - a datafield for vertical distance to course point / cue (something I miss on my edge 1000 device as well.)
    Crossing my fingers for both.

Also support for using Edge remote to switch between datascreens, for safety and convenience.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1268827.jpg
