Fenix 5X - 6.71 Beta Release

Hello Fenix 5X users,

We have new beta software ready for your upcoming adventures!

Please read the 'notes' and 'installation instructions' in the 'Updates and Downloads' page found in the link below. Only the system software has been updated in this beta, but we've included the most recent versions of software for all peripherals, including text files.

Note: Please allow for the updates to propagate across all servers. There is no need to post that the link does not work. It will after a bit of patience.

6.71 Change Log Notes:
  • Added support for new activities like Elliptical, Stair Stepper, Floor Climb and Yoga.
  • Improved the reliability to connect to Wi-Fi networks which were setup on device.
  • Fixed an issue where the Hourly alert would not adjust automatically after a manual or automatic time change. (Ex: Crossing a time zone boundary.)
  • Fixed an issue where one could access the “Set time with GPS” option in the Controls menu, while executing an Indoor activity.
  • Fixed a potential issue where long SwimRun activities would seldom produce corrupt FIT files.
  • Fixed a potential issue where the device would persist ANT connection to a broadcasted-to device in low power, when using the “Broadcast during activity” option.

Please send all bug reports to "][email protected], and indicate which model of the f?nix 5 series you have in the subject line.
  • Is the 'no timeout' problem back for backlight 'not during activity'?

I've keys off, alerts off, gesture off and timeout = no timeout.
If I press light button at watch face, backlight turns off automatically after 60 sec.

Wait the dreaded time out problem? Say it is not say please? It was one of my main issues with the fenix 5X when I got it and I was very grateful when the problem was gone with version 5.4. If it is back again that would make me mad...
  • I can't find the cadence fields either. The cadence field group are missing when I try to add a data field to a data screen in eliptical app.

Can you add Connect IQ data fields? I have an app (AppBuilder) that lets you display most built-in Garmin values, based on a math formula of your choice. In your case it wouldn't really be a fancy math formula, just a variable name, such as:

    Cadence,AvgCadence,or MaxCadence

    https://apps.garmin.com/en-NZ/apps/deb4b872-48be-409c-b91a-9b8485d2fc80

I know it's not nearly as convenient as having access to the normal field, but maybe you can use my app while you wait for Garmin to implement your feature request.
  • Just to confirm that it's acknowledged that beta team are working on both cadence field and no timeout problem.

    Hi,
just got my Fenix 5X last Friday and even with the beta installation I still have problem to connect to my hidden SSID... I had to create a friend access to be able to connect to the network. That problem was not prennent with the previous 3HR though.

Any plan to figure it out ??
  • Can the elliptical app be used outside with gps with a ellipticgo or bionic runner or is it indoor only?

The built-in is a relabeled Cardio App which gives only Heart Rate and Calories, so I don't think it uses GPS. However, there is an app in the app store that does ElliptiGO. :)

I don't mean to sidetrack the discussion here, but I have to mention: hiding SSID does you more harm than good. I don't know the specifics why you choose to hide it, but if it's for some supposed security benefits, there are none. Finding a hidden wifi name is ridiculously easy and you are only making things harder on yourself - case in point :)

Speaking of wifi and device security, I'm very interested to see whether Garmin will patch the 5X to fix the recently discovered wifi vulnerability. As Ray Maker noted, it'll be interesting to see when/if wearable manufacturers react.
