FW 6.0 Elevation issue?

Has there been a change in how the F5 plots elevation? I run a relatively flat 6 bike trail miles several days per week. This run goes under a deep 25 foot underpass 2 times out so I will see this 4 times per run. My 920 was SOOO good I could see even elevation changes of a few feet, but the F5 wasn't nearly as good, but acceptable. Now since the 6.0 FW, I don't see any elevation changes. This morning I got an elevation change of 20 feet and a month ago on the same run I got 112 feet. Elevation plots don't make any sense except approximately correct elevation (nearly sea level).

I haven't done any bike rides with the new FW so I don't know what to expect when I'm climbing 2000 feet, but I'm wondering if anyone has seen similar issues.

That said, I've been playing around looking at elevation while going up and down stairs and my F5 does a fairly good job of displaying the elevation change so I'm wondering how the new FW is now recording elevation. Not doing a good job while running or even my relatively flat commute rides that also goes on overpasses so should show some reasonable changes.

    Am I the only one who has this problem? Since nobody responded, I rode my bike home and used both my Edge 520 and Fenix 5s at the same time. I went briefly to this bike trail and rode a 15 foot underpass (about 5 meters) 6 times. Garmin Connect doesn't allow changing the elevation scale so it's hard to see the elevation changes, but the mobile GC shows the elevation changes. The Fenix 5s with the latest FW absolutely doesn't show ANYTHING!!! The total elevation using the 520 is 108 feet and the Fenix 5s shows 14 feet!!!

    Incredibly when the fenix data is uploaded to Strava, it shows 120 feet elevation. I didn't think Strava did a recalculation unless you changed the setting to recalculate.

    Well I wouldn't go that far. I love the watch for everything else. I'm pretty sure it's a firmware issue as this didn't happen until 6.0

    As far as I am concerned there have always been issues with elevation inaccuracies, unless you calibrate every hour or so the elevation is rarely accurate, I think mainly due to barometer drift. I was certainly expecting it to be more accurate than it ever has been for me. Maybe I expected too much. However I too like the watch for almost everything else. True for the money it should be better but I have accepted that I chose not to take it back to the store within the applicable timescale so have to put up with things that are not ideal.

    I have a hunch it's how Garmin Connect is recording/displaying the elevation. Strava has the correct elevation and even my fenix 5s has the correct total elevation (just looked at the history). They must have changed something in the fit file that GC isn't reading correctly.

    I am in contact with the beta-team ...for several month now. No improvement at all. Barometer calibration is for nothing concerning this problem.

    As you can see in your connect link the parsing of the fit file is incorrect. Look at the version number of the firmware as an example. You can also see that it has height corrections enabled (which means that it ignores all data from the watch and calculates from the map)

    Most likely the diagram will not change even if you change the setting, even if the summary numbers will change.

    Connect back-end team has had similar errors for almost 2 years on and off. Some bugs depend on serial numbers and some on some other unknown factors. They ignore to fix it or are incompetent, I even had to return one fenix 3 though RMA to get a new working serialnumber.

    You're a genius!!! That was the problem. Somehow GC changed to elevation correction enabled. When I disabled it, the elevation was corrected!!!

    Annoyingly, GC doesn't back out the elevation correction in the plot when you turn correction off. If the correction off sticks for your next activity, the plot should look right. It might not, though; the Fenix 3 series had an issue where for months GC was applying elevation correction to some serial numbers, because it sincerely believed they didn't have a barometric altimeter so they needed to be corrected. It was fixed eventually... I hope your activities are not a sign of this problem showing up for the F5.

    This problem, though, is all about GC handling the data wrongly; it's not an issue with the watch itself. ETA: I started writing this before Crispin's post appeared; I agree with him entirely.


    So when this watch will start to work properly? It has been a couple of months already on the market. They will soon release next one while this one hasn?t been working properly and I will end up loosing my money. I am not testing this watch for Garmin I bought it to use it and if they new there was a problem they shouldn?t release at the first place. I feel cheated When Garmin is releasing the watch they are quick to take money and now where there is an issue they seem not to care. They can?t even do a proper software in the era where people flying into the space. It is nothing but a joke


    You've posted a stream of poorly-spelt posts complaining about how terrible your watch is, based on no more evidence than the absolute calibration of the barometer being about 1mbar different from somebody else's watch. If you want your complaints taken seriously, show some evidence that the elevation plot for an activity is different enough from the true elevation to affect your training badly.
