Feature request: not on wrist detection to stop vibration

Hi,

I have my smart notifications on on my Fenix 5s. I like those a lot and also like that it vibrates if there is a new notification.

The thing I don't like is when I have my watch (which is rarely) laying on my night stand or when I'm charging the watch that it just keeps on vibrating with every notification.
Since there is an always on heart rate monitor on the the device it must be doable to detect wetter the user is wearing the watch or not and then stop the vibrations.

Could you please implement this feature!

    Hi, thx mcbadger

I have posted it as an idea as well.

It might also help with the completely hit 'n miss sleep detection = in the sense of:
    - on wrist, no movement, low heartrate = sleep
    - off wrist, no heartrate= not being worn
    - on wrist, few, but clear wrist movements, low heartrate= sitting at computer, not sleeping

(I've had it a number of times now that I was playing a computer game, and it records as asleep)
(I've also had it, numerous times, that during holiday or weekend, my sleeping hours shift up by more than two hours, and promptly no sleep is detected.)
(The most galling experience is when you go to sleep, sync in the morning and GC cheerfully tells you - "for sleep detection, please wear your watch while sleeping")

btw: my fitbit surge, which was no perfect by any means, detected sleep without fail, including naps during daytime - so it's really not impossible to achieve.
  • Have you tried contacting Garmin with a feature request? The more they hear from, it maybe indicate more of a demand.

Hey Garmin, it’s beyond ridiculous that there’s no option to stop your watches from vibrating while charging.

Why would I ever want to hear the terrible buzz of my watch against a piece of furniture every time I get a notification? I also have to wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that your charging cables only seem to last about a year of regular use. Surely having the attached watch buzz violently with every notification can’t be good for the connection.

  • This totally makes sense. Can't believe this was suggested 2 years ago. Does Garmin have anyone employed who reads these forums?

Doesn't matter whether they read the forums. We know this has been suggested via the official form and, frankly, this is too obvious to believe no one on Garmin's staff hadn't suggested the feature already. The only reasonable explanation is that Garmin's management simply doesn't care enough to bother with the (very small) engineering effort required to actually implement this. That, or someone tried to patent this obvious feature and Garmin's too scared to fight it.

  • Turning on "Do not disturb" mode via shortcut before charging solves the problem. It's not the most elegant solution but it's not much of a hassle either.

The fact that we need to manually turn on Do Not Disturb to avoid having the watch vibrate while plugged in (and then remember to turn it off when done) *is* the problem, not a solution. If Garmin's software is remotely sane, disabling vibration should have simply been the standard behavior, and would have taken only a few lines of code to implement.

I mean, we could also all wash our clothes by hand, measure our heart rates with our finger and any regular old watch, etc. but the reason we buy products like this is for convenience, not so that we have to manually take the time (and, again, remember) to do things that should so obviously be automatic.

  • To be perfectly honest, you probably spent more time typing the above than you would spend turning DND mode on/off during charging for the lifecycle of the watch. Have a Merry Christmas and enjoy all the simple and imperfect things in life!
