Fenix 5x vs 935

Hi,
which one to choose??
Battery duration 935 24h fenix 5x 20h
weight 935 48g fenix 5x 98g
Cage 935 plastic fenix 5x stainless steel
Memory 935 64MB fenix 5x 12GB
Maps 935 no maps f?nix 5x yes maps

The price is the same but a little more expensive f?nix.
  • I had two Fenix 5X (one was given to a friend as a gift). I have never seen a single sensor drop-out with either of them!

  • Ok I see that the great majority of them use it for hiking, training, mtb, trail, but for running none ??
From what you say the plastic case of 935 is the reason for the best signal. The extra weight of the case of 5x fenix in stainless steel and worse signal
  • I run with my 5x 4-5 times a week. I'd say it is my primary activity with the 5x even if it wasn't my primary reason for purchasing. The reality is that I get into the mountains much less often than I get out the front door to run. The extra durability, and maps are much appreciated when I do get to use this watch for hiking, mountain biking, or backpacking, but I don't do those activities as often as I'd like.

One thing to keep in mind is that I have little to no experience with using the built in optical HRM while running. I've been using a chest strap HRM since the start of owning this watch.

  • Seen a lot of runners use them and ultra runs - they really push the battery. I don't mind the weight at all with the neoprene strap and the stainless steel strap gives it a nice dress weight. I use it mainly for mtb - love that I can ride for hours and still have a ton of battery left. I don't have any blue tooth, HR or bad GPS issues with it here in Florida. I did notice the tracking got very bad when I was in London, Paris, Boston and Minneapolis. Sometimes seemed even the sight of a larger building caused the GPS to draw like a five year old trying to colour between the lines!
  • HRM optics say that it is very bad with sweat does not work well.
  • I've nevered has an issue with sweat and the OHRM, and I currently use 4 different Garmin watches with OHRM. (including a fenix 5x in the heat of the summer)

Why do you have basically the same thread in the 935 and f5x forums? It is so you can see both sides? It's kind of a pain in that the the folks in f5x thread can't respond to posts in the thread in the 935 forum and vice versa. Maybe make one a link to the other?
  • One question, to snowgar with fenix 5 you can go to a destination putting the cursor where you want to go ?? or do you have to put cordenadas or pre-established sites ??
For example if you are in the mountains and want to go to a site as you enter the address ??

Well, it is better you know where you go before you start, or upload the track and see on watch on map there, I personally study the track on the tablet before I go and on the watch just checking it. And it is possible, although not very handy, to put point of interest also on the watch on the way.

    Not at all.
  • Maps was the reason I bought Fenix 5X, 'cos I was already using Fenix 3 and it did the core things Fenix 5 or FR935 do. But when following a course it was hard to decide on road conjunctions in the forest. With Fenix 5X it's much better. Yeah, I can use my phone too but a device on my wrist is better for me.
I was usually running but since I bought myself a road race bike, I've been riding a lot, almost 60 - 100 KM daily and Fenix 5X with maps functions fine for me. I save phone battery, which is important for other functions like emergensies or Ingress playing. :) It's good to find and follow a route to get out of forest as fast as possible when its dark, without the fear of phone battery.
But if no need to maps, prefer cheaper versions. They don't have 32MB RAM so that consume less power. Also their processors may be faster too, looking at benchmark tests. Fenix 5X metal bezel and saphire glass is durable but bezel gets scratches earlier than glasses and black/gray bezel is ugly when scratched. I'd prefer FR935 or Fenix 5 with silver bezel if I did'nt need maps.

I thought you could put an address and I would take you there. So , you have to put where you want to go before going out to the mountain ??
