Hi to all
I have an APAC version of the fenix 5x.
I have an issue to upload GPX files on the watch, I tried different ways, through garming connect or copy / paste on "new files" folder of the watch, I can not retrieve those routes on the watch.
do I do something wrong ?

thank you
Stephane
  • bryerstephane,

    I don't know the answer to your problems, but I've found the following to be easiest for me.

    Note: I have a fenix 5X, Oregon 700, and a couple of Suunto watches. The instructions below are targeted at the Garmin units. One thing to understand with the downloading of routes through routeCourse is, once the route is downloaded it'll appear in Courses. You don't need to go back into routeCourse after a successful download. I mistakenly pre-downloaded the course, then when I got to the trail head I'd launch routeCourse and it was trying to connect to my phone, which was back in the car, so I thought I had no courses. Nope, I just needed to look in Courses, not routeCourse.

  • You do not need the step with creating in moves count if you do not have a lot of routes there already.

    If you are fine without TBT/coursePoints, then route course have the best route creating interface that I've tried. Works flawlessly on the go on mobile.

  • I've looked extensively at the route builder interface between routeCourse, Movescount, and others. Movescount, by far, has the most extensive set of trails and is easiest to just click and go. Keyword, being "trails". On road will be about even, though I still vastly prefer the Movescount interface.

    Sorry all for my late reply, at today I still can not upload a gpx file, I had exchange of emails with Garmin support team, tried few things as well using basecamp and dxg but nothing working.
    Last reply from Garmin support team was as below, I do not want to split the route as there are race I will run (by the way, the battery can handle a 35 hours race ?)

    Hello Stephane,

    In addition to memory limitations, the Fenix 5x has file limitations. Files that exceed these limitations cannot be read by the watch. It appears the track you are sending a track that has over 13,000 points. The maximum number of points that can be read by the Fenix 5x is 10,000. (That is per track, not a total for all your tracks combined.)

    To resolve the issue you can split the track into two parts and send both over to the device. (You can do this by in Basecamp by clicking Tools and select Divide.) Or you will need to delete edit the track down to 10,000 points.

    If you have any other questions, suggestions, or concerns, please contact us again.

    Thank you for choosing Garmin,

    If I do want TBT, what should I use? I learned yesterday that if I use Map routing with routeCourse the watch does TBT but with almost nonstop alerts from via points it adds.
  • I create the course with way-/course points at gpsies.com. Export it to tcx. Convert to fit with either Mcbadger tool or Fitfilerepairtool.
    Copy the fit to New files folder on watch.

    Two things thats important at gpsies.com:
    - put the waypoint on the course line. You see a difference in mouse pointer if you on off line.
    - 5x is most of the time 20-30 metres behind you. Add an extra GPS point and the course point 20-30 metres before you actually want it to show up.

    Do you know if I can still do a structured workout with this or not? My current routine every morning:
    * Load my courses (using routeCourse)
    * Launch the Training Peaks app on my watch, download today's work out, start a Run with it.
    * Load a course that I know will roughly match the volume needs (most of my workouts are duration based, not distance).
    * Do my running workout and eventually kill it because the TBTs are too noisy (via points from using "Use Maps" routing) or because I've gone off course (no TBT) and the off course alerts get annoying.

    So I am not sure how to make any use of the routing features. I would try the watch generated courses but they tend to be no use to me as the watch generated routes aren't on sidewalks. :/

    Rant over... for now. :)

    Will try what you suggested and report back: thanks!
  • I do not use navigation based on map for this.
    App setting-> Routing-> Courses = Follow course
    App setting-> Routing-> Activity = Hiking

    Never tried a structured workout together with course.
