Merge exercises

Hi!

I know there are threads regarding the topic of merging two or more exercises into a single one but somehow I still didn't solve my problem:

I was cycling and created by chance two different fit-files and therefore exercises of what I'd consider one whole exercise. What I've tried so far and unsuccesfully:

1. Merged those two files on www.fitfiletools.com. I transfered then the file onto the watch. The watch doesn't see the file, it's like I didn't do the exercise. I then sent the original two files, too, and voil? the two exercises were back. Uploading the merged file to Garmin Connect does nothing in as much as Garmin Connect errors that there's already that exercise in the system and it then shows me the first of the two exercises.
I named the merged file in the same vain as the other files, only as if it was made later.

2. Merged those two files on http://gotoes.org/strava/Combine_GPX_TCX_FIT_Files.php and created a gpx-file. I didn't even bother sending it to the watch since it isn't a fit-file. But uploading it to Garmin Connect actually does work so far as it shows the whole itinerary including time and heart rate in the summary, but not speed or distance. In the graphs below, however, it does indicate the recorded values only that the graphical representation of the values doesn't seem consistent.

3. Imported those two files into BaseCamp and that's that. I seemingly can't do anything further with it as there's no merging option.

So what do I do? I mean I know what I'd have done with my Polar CS800RX. There was that genius option IN THE WATCH ITSELF to combine exercises...
  • Fit File Repair Tool probably would do it.

    Thanks, I'll try it.

EDIT: I've tried repairing the merged file but does nothing. That files isn't accepted by the watch and it disappears from the Activity folder every time.

Besides, the Fit File Repair Tool is quite pricey for the tiny piece of work I'd need it for (which doesn't work anyway). The demo version inserts dummy values in the half of your file.
  • Regarding the merging of the two into Garmin Connect (GC) - Although I do not know what flags/internal information is used to determine duplicates, it is not forgiving at all. You cannot merge and keep the merged and originals at the same time. I just exported from GC two activities that where back to back (as fit files "originals"), used the fitfiletools to merge them and tried to import into GC - considered a duplicate event. Delete the original two from GC and the import is fine with a new activity consisting of both the original ones with all the data.

As far as on the watch, I cannot test this at the moment, that and the fact that I tend to remove activities from the watch on a regular basis rather than keep them (once synced with GC, I do not really care if they are on the watch). I'm not even sure if you can add an activity onto the watch - if you can, I suspect the same issue must be solved - delete the originals from the watch. Also, you imply that you dropped it into the activity folder??? Suspect they should be put into the new files folder for the watch to process (again, assuming you can even do this).

If you post or pm the files I can test it.

Thank you very much for your offer but I don't think I'll want to bother with it anymore. I'll simply try to remember not to stop an ongoing activity and that's it.

Up to you but, as I mentioned above, it seemed to work perfectly for me using fitfiletools as long as I deleted the original 2 activities in Garmin Connect before importing the new combined fit file.

The watch itself just deleted the merged file while the origial two files remained removed.
