I have a GPX file that has about 34,000 track points (181km course).
What is the best way to reduce the track points to be less than 10,000 so that I can import it into my Fenix 5x?

It's a feature of 3d Route Builder if I am not mistaken.

Simply use BaseCamp :
Select the track
Then menu Edit/Advanced/Filter Selected Track...
There are several filtering options (by time, by distance, by max number of points ...)
