Fenix 5x on software 5.10 (broken) useless in navigation

This is a copy of what I?ve sent to the beta team

Hello Garmin team,
This is a bug report but from a really disappointed (not to say pi.sed) user. Hence a longer version.

So far I considered the 5x a tool, but after my yesterday 100k mountain trail race I see it?s no more than a toy - moreover a toy that can?t even deliver what?s its advertised as.
I?m not going to blame the watch (faulty software) for not finishing my race ? that?s entirely on me. I should have spent more time studying maps and trails ? and I wouldn?t get lost. My bad. I put my trust where I shouldn?t.

Fenix 5x can?t follow a course a properly. To be more specific it has no clue to that one might be already on a course when it?s started and it insists to navigate you to the start.
That?s what happened yesterday. I had my course prepared. All waypoints ? valleys, summits, refreshing points, control points added with special care ? manually of course and using 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] party developed software, because that?s something that Garmin can?t sort as well. But that?s a different story.

I used an official track taken from trace de trail ? all good and legit. Due to safety reasons starting point was moved by 120m as opposed to what was set in the gpx course. This messed all the navigation. When I started to run, all navigation specific data screens where useless. Navigation bug was pointing me to the official (120m difference!!) starting point and Fenix wouldn?t switch to ?on course? status even thou I was closely following the pink line shown on map screen.

I hoped it will rethink it at waypoint one, but that didn?t happen.

The only thing that was left, was the map screen with it?s pink course line. Without waypoints and alerts. And yes, I tried stop to course and start it again hoping watch will figure out what?s going on. It didn?t.

This is a bug. A serious and utterly stupid one. I believe it?s been introduced recently as I used navigation features before and didn?t had similar problems. I?m no software developer but I find amazing how one can brake different things while trying to fix others ? in a ?stable? version?
Seriously If I where new into gps devices I would conclude that that?s the way it works now period. But your own devices from 10-15 years ago work so much better! Not to mention they are more ?feature-rich?. You know ? basic stuff ? like zoomable elevation screen or ?ascent to waypoint? data field.

Also, you should do something with battery use. 8 hrs of constant activity (1sec recording, no Glonass, external HR, no IQ fields) used 90% of battery. I had a battery pack of course and could use the wach longer, but?. Did I mention that new charging cable is the worst decision ever? Fenix3 charging plate was the right way to do it. You simply broke it.

  • The issue of late course starting (after an activity start) and watch trying to re-route to the start has been an issue since first release.

It has not been solved by later releases including this 5.10. It has been reported.
It is not a problem with the F3; so you would think they know how to fix it.

The solution until they do fix this is to ensure you 'do course' before starting activity at designated start point of your course.
Oh, and don't 'Resume Later' as that also attempts to send you back to start.
  • Actually, I get the problem with start in the middle of a course when I used specific programs to do the tcx 2 fit-conversion. If I use Fit File Repair Tool or RouteCourse to convert from tcx to fit, I've no problem to start in the middle of a course.
  • I just did my own test to see if this 'late course start bug' is just a Fenix 5X thing or if is present on my Fenix 5 on 5.10 (and as a cross check on my Fenix 3). The course I created is here https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/16091039 and the track from my Fenix 5 is here https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1913824071 and Fenix 3 here https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1914136319 . If you zoom in on the start, you can see I joined the course about 200 metres after the start point. The Fenix 5 worked fine, with a pop up message to say Course Started as soon as I hit the course route. The next waypoint, course distance remaining and elevation plot data fields all worked fine too. The only thing that didn't function properly was the Virtual Partner data screen; which just displayed blanks top and bottom (confirmation really, as I'd seen someone post about Virtual Partner not working when following a Course on the 935 forum - apparently this is already a known bug https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/running/forerunner-935-aa/1239373-possible-bug ).

[please ignore the HR data in the activity links above, I was testing the limits of reception on both watches to my Scosche Rhythm+ (Fenix 3 ANT+ and Fenix 5 main HR BLE and CIQ Aux HR ANT+) and I obviously found that limit.]
  • With 5X (5.10) I did a 30k today following a course I made in GC. After I finished, saved and exited the activity, I moved about 200m along from the start point - started Run, selected Navigation - Course and started the activity on the same course. As Crispin saw with his 5, the 5x showed a "Course Started" message and ran normally from that point. I only ran about 100m with it but it did not try to get me back to the start. Perhaps does have something to do with how the course was made?
  • Imagine being on the receiving end of this post and you'll understand how IT production support can be a soul-sucking endeavor at times. If you want to get the most out of your bug reports, stick to the facts and try to describe the issues as clearly as possible, while avoiding self-righteous grandstanding.
  • I've started courses "off course" before with the 5X and never had an issue. In fact I'm pretty careless with how I start my courses. I don't plan my new runs/courses precisely - just a rough start & end point. Then when I get to the location that's close to the start, I just start the course. Somestimes I am 400-700 metres from the start. As soon as I hit the course line, the 5X starts its thing and shows correct distances, etc.
