Why is Garmin ignoring the GPS issue?

Hi,
It seems that with each firmware version that comes out, we are disappointed to find out that the GPS issues have not been address.
There's a 52-page thread on the GPS issues in the Fenix 5 and each time someone approaches you with hard proof that there's an issue, you dismiss him/her with various excuses.

Why not address the issue?
Give us a clear statement whether you are aware of the problems and are working on it or if we'll never get an accurate GPS reading on the Fenix 5.

I've switched from the Polar M400 (which was very accurate) to the high-end Fenix 5 and I was expecting at the very least to get similar GPS accuracy (if not better due to it being a high-end watch and due to GLONASS support).

But what I got is a watch that works horrendously when the GLONASS is on (routes are all over the place) and inaccurate routes with GPS only.

If this issue is not resolved, I will never buy Garmin again!

  • I also had a Polaris M400 and now I switched to Garmin Fenix 3 Hr, and that's because everyone praised what a wonderful and the best. As it turned out, he has only a price. The GPS + Glonass track is the same GPS I catch for a very long time when the Polar M400 caught on the moment only that there was a GPS update every two weeks to improve the track. Here I am slightly disappointed with such a professional brand as garmin. I would add that every drop in pressure is associated with problems indicating height sometimes even as I set manually and updated and so I had wrong height indications.
And what are the breaks in the signal from Garmin what time did you see this red mark? Blue is Polar, red is Garmin.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1296697.jpg
  • 1) this is a fenix 5 forum and you have a fenix 3
    2) there is nothing beyond normal in the pictures you sent
    3) do you have auto-pause disabled? the gaps can be related to brief stops and the watch pausing for a second
    4) do you have 1 second recording enabled?
  • GPS accuracy terrible in version 7.60. :(

Ditto for me. I've had the Fenix 5 for a while now and the GPS accuracy seemed fine until it updated to 7.6. Now it consistently measures under. My regular 5k parkrun now measures 4.6k.
  • Same issue here, two weeks ago i run a 10k run and my garmin fenix 5 showed 11.09klm where my friends garmin fenix 3 showed 10,02klm Mine was off 1,09klm which is not acceptable by me. In general my gps is always off.
I mentioned this to the retailer i purchased it from and they agreed to assess it so i posted it to them yesterday. I thought that my garmin was faulty and needed to be replaced! After reading all these comments here though it seems it might be an issue with all fenix 5. If this is the case im curious what will be their response!
Anyone here sent theirs back and got a response?

I turned GLONASS off and have been getting more consistent and accurate results.

I initially had issues early on with GPS accuracy, but since I turned off GLONASS it has worked far better. I get the same fairly consistent results each time I run. What I don't get is good pace data - I can run under trees and my pace immediately goes haywire but the GPS tracks and overall distance will still be fine.
I've come to realise that while overall GPS performance is fine, pacing data is out of the question for all but a small number of devices. This would be fine, except I can't keep a solid connection with my footpod for pacing data, and Garmin keep telling me it's either the batteries on my footpod or it's unsupported because it's not a Garmin pod

Anyway - maybe check your GPS settings? Everyone tends to assume having both GPS and GLONASS will improve tracking but often it doesn't. Or sometimes it's the other way round! You just need to experiement and find out
  • Although I have a 5x but see similar problems.
Compared to my Forerunner 235, the tracks are often catastrophic, and I do not talk about a restless, "trembling" track line compared to 235, I'm aware that this is for GPS also "normal". There are already "sawtooth outliers" up to 50 meters and tracks 50 meters next to the street.

But: What I'm wonder, if the GPS is bad with a Fenix 5/5x then I asume that this is then everytime, ... no ... , some tracks are poor, some are comparable to the 235 (to avoid the question: I have bot watches to the same time on my running to compare, both GPS and Glonass and 1 second recording). I also know that this is not a scientific comparison but such deviations I did not expect. (or my Fenix 5x is defect, could also be ? )

Often I read in the forum that this is due to the harware, but really? I had before also a Fenix 2, Ihad the same experience, GPS was very inaccurate. But after a while they got a grip on that, after many updates.

My hope is that they get a grip on the 5 as well.
:-) Maybe the Fenix developers could talk to the Forerunner developers how they do it. :-)
  • I got a Garmin Fenix 5 in January. Initially it performed well but lately the data is miles out.

i did a 20km cycle in the U.K. It unbelievably recorded it as 70.84km! I put it down to a sync issue with the speed sensor.

the next 2 runs I did looked about right but they were in Singapore.

I then did a run today in the U.K. which was about 7.5-8km. It recorded it as 11.96km.

I have never had any issues until the Fenix 5.

is there anything I can do to stabalise the distance issues? I was on GPS only but am going to try GLONASS as well to see if that helps.

i have no issues with my other garmin watches.
  • Jonchild those aren't minor GPS tracking variances - that sounds like a faulty device. You should get in touch with Garmin support or the retailer you bought it from to get a replacement
