Fenix 5 Sapphire (wifi) Altimeter/Barometer issue- anyone else?

Hey there everyone. Former Fenix 3 owner who counts himself lucky for dodging all the reported problems the 3HR had with its altimeter/barometer...... I've had a Fenix 5 Sapphire on ver 4.1 for the past two months or so with no issues, until around 2 weeks ago. I was walking around my house in the morning (having only been out of bed for about an hour) when I received a GOAL alert for completing my stairs goal (set at default of 10 flights)...... well this is weird as I don't have stairs in my house and I hadn't left the house at all for the hour I'd been awake. So...... I went to my ABC widget and noted that my altitude was all over the place. If you check out the pictures you'll see the watch suddenly decided I had climbed to 7,224 feet from my normal level of around 200-200 feet.....and then quickly dropped down to -1,786 feet. You'll note that after that the altimeter reads 203 feet and remained steady for the next 3 hours or so. The 203 feet was based on a manual calibration after I noted the huge variations. The shot of Garmin Connect for stair shows that the watch thought I climbed 26 flights and descended 2 during that weird episode. I can attest to the fact that there were no pressure gradient changes/systems in the area. Stable pressure was present.

The next day I went for a run and noted the watch was down at -1,500 feet or something weird like that (my home elevation is around 220 feet but the watch is off a good bit and I have to set it low to match the local airport barometer readings)....... anyway, so I manually corrected the watch to around 180 feet, started the run app, waited for GPS and then went running. Note here that I have the GPS "auto cal" during activities set to off. During my run on a known course I received the one mile lap alert WAY early (about 1/4 mile early based on mapping it after). When I got home I noted the altimeter had drifted from where I had set it back down to -1,640 feet and the activity elevation graph shows me at -1,640 for the duration of the run. Since 1,640 feet is about a 1/4 of a mile, I think the watch took the descent distance and the distance I had run and decided I had hit one mile (based on my descent and my forward movement).

Since then I have been on vacation walking all over Washington, D.C for a week, watching the watch altitude like a hawk. I have only had the chance to do one run since the last run I mention above. I haven't had the HUGE fluctuations noted above, but I do see a couple of hundred feet up and down every now and then. On my latest run the watch altitude was wrong, but I elected not to fool with it (recalibrate manually or with GPS) as to not induce the same issue I had on my previous run, and all went well. The watch caught the variations of my course (pretty flat running), but just at a lower and incorrect altitude the whole time.

I will save you a lot of typing and say here that I have experimented putting the watch in Barometer and Altimeter modes with the same weird things happening over the course of the past weeks (I keep it in Auto normally and that's what it was in with the initial incident). I've also tried manual and GPS recals and it will hold for varying times before it drifts again.... sometimes it holds for a few hours, sometimes a day or more. It varies. I will also say my F3 had some altitude drifts in the Auto mode, but maybe 10-20 feet over the course of a few days.... nothing like this. And I NEVER saw a negative altitude on it like I keep seeing on this one.

I rinse the watch in fresh water in the sink after every run or swim so I don't think it's an issue with something in the sensor. I've powered the watch off and back on numerous times. I've syncd with GC with both my phone and via the computer. I really don't want to reset the watch to factory settings but I'm thinking that's the next step to rule out software.

So, with all that, if you've read this far good on you!!!!! Any thoughts on this? Thanks! ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1239045.png ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1239046.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1239047.jpg
  • Hello, all i know is that F5 has a barometer bug after a swim session, altitude is random. It should be fixed in last beta firmwares but i didn't try them.
After each swim session, i need to recalibrate altitude.
Have you washed your watch when it happened ?
    Regards

Great thought! I have noticed that as well when swimming with it. It happened with my F3 but nowhere near as bad as with the F5.

To answer your question, no I had not rinsed the watch in the past 48 hours prior to this "glitch". Wish I had as it might explain the issue and the continuing weird behavior over the past few weeks.

So an update- sent an email to garmin suppprt describing the issue and lining to this forum post. Their answer- watch needs to be sent in for "repair or replacement".

I decided to do a factory restore as a last resort after this just to be sure...... a bit more stable but still wandering all over the place. Guessing hardware based on their instant response to send it in and the lack of success with the restore.

So now I have a very expensive piece of tech that's just over 2 months old that needs to be sent in (on my dime no less) for "repair or replacement". Guessing if it's replaced I may even be lucky enough to get a refurb. I'm a bit irritated thinking of all this. In Garmin's defense, I haven't asked them about any of this but this is how the warranty reads. Oh, and I'll be without my watch for how long?

Maybe I'll lock it in Baro mode and live with it for a month till I travel close to an REI and just trade it in for a new one. Saves me from being without it for a while, paying to ship it in and in the end maybe getting a refurb in place of a two month old unit.

    Sorry, rant over........ <sigh>

Besides all this and the horrible new implementation of DND on 5.1, I really do love this watch as much as I loved my F3.

So last update for a bit. I I didnt want to add another post but I needed to address my above concerns/rant and give some props to Garmin support.

I called them yesterday, detailed the situation and case # from my email, and went over my options. Turns out my watch is new enough that I won't be getting a refurb, they are swapping it for a new one........ and they paid for the shipping to them. They probably don't want me floating all that out here, but I want everyone to know that they took care of me. It really was a painless and pleasant experience (well, pleasant enough considering I'm sans Fenix 5 for around a week).

Thanks for for the great service Garmin. Now here's to hoping the replacement is all good! I'll probably post one last update after I've had the new one for a while.

I have the same problem, sorry if I hijack this thread but currently I'm not able to write any new post..
so purchased my new fenix 5 2 weeks ago.. the altimeter displayed -115 meters.. ok.. well I have to sync.. I synced yesterday on the seaside of santa monica (los angeles), with the GPS was giving -1 meter.. ok...
now today I am in florence and I am at 45 meters of altitude, (based on Iphone 6 GPS).. and the watch is reporting -4 meters..
ok.. i flew from the west coast of US to italy.. it may happen..

do I have to sync the altitude every time i fly internationally? also.. the GPS give me an altitude of 54 meters, 9 meters off from the GPS of the iphone.. it's not a LOT.. but it's twice the minimum accuracy of the GPS... do I have to be worried?

    thanks.

    Antonio.

P.s. if an admin can find out why i cannot subscribe to threads (i get this error: (Sorry, you are not authorized to view this page (no_permission) ) or to post would be great.

Unfortunately this is normal for the Fenix 5. I only have to travel 20 miles and the elevation will be out by 5 meters and then may drift throughout the day due to weather changes.

Will do. Watch should be with Garmin tomorrow (well, technically later today). Based on their email, I'm hoping I'll have the new one by mid to late next week. I'll give a quick update once I receive it, update the firmware, wear it a few days, and complete a few runs. I'll also comment on GPS and OHR accuracy with the new one, as my returned one was fine (in my opinion) in these areas, but I know others have been having issues.
  • just wondering if your replacement was fine or not?

Shame on me, I didn't provide the update I promised. So here's the short answer: No, the replacement (a new F5 sapphire) had the same Barometer/Altimeter (Baro/Alt) issue as my original. I will say GPS and OHR have been fine on this one as they were with my F3 and my first F5 (I've refrained from adding my "data-free analysis" to the GPS threads, but as a military pilot the GPS precision I've seen from my F3 and both the F5s I've had, I have to say for the size of the device and it's antenna, I think the GPS is great- mine keeps me on the correct side of the road most times, including running on heavily wooded trails at work).

So now the LONG version on the Baro/Alt. I received the new one on or about 23 August. I'll preface that I had Baro/Alt issues with this new one on about 7 separate days between 27 Nov and 18 Dec. Down here in south Alabama that correlates to cold and low-humidity conditions, coupled with long-sleeve, static-generating clothing. Adding my "data-free analysis" (i.e., opinion) again, I buy the discussions about these deviations being caused by static discharge effecting the sensor. I've seen discussions from some educated people on here about pressure drift, frontal boundaries/passages, etc, but again, as a military aviator who has been studying weather phenomenon for 20 years now, the deviations I experienced can't be explained by this (although a lot of people who report drift can be attributed to these phenomena). I am going to attempt to paste in the pictures and notes I took during all the deviations back in November and December in a post below. It'll be LONG but hopefully will show everyone how things went.

NOW, LET ME ADD THIS....... before I always rinsed my F3 and the F5 in cool water after finishing a workout (run, etc) or a swim. Once the hypothesis of static discharge issues started making its rounds some folks suggested putting the watch in a bowl or cup of water. Some recommended soapy water, and a few people were having success with this method. So, I started doing this after my last major issue on 18 December. After my run I placed the watch (fully submerged) in a cup of warm water with a bit of hand soap mixed in. I let it sit in the bowl while I took a shower. I then took it out and rinsed it with water from the sink and dried it with a towel. I now do this procedure every time I run with the watch (usually every other day) and have not had a Baro/Alt issue since I started this on 18 Dec........ So that helped during the rest of winter with low humidity, but who knows if I won't see issues again next winter. I hope not.

Anyway, I'm ok doing this after I exercise to keep the watch clean (and the Baro from freaking out), but it is funny the things we are doing to keep a PREMIUM outdoos watch working properly in certain, normal conditions.........

Hope all this helps. We'll see how my posting about the issues I had goes when I try the next post (I'll be attempting to copy them from my Notes on my iPhone).
