I wanted to love this watch but sadly it is back in the box ready for me to return later this week.

I'm in my mid 50's and pretty active, I workout 6 days a week, mixing P90x and Insanity, plus I walk 7 days a week. Normally after a very early morning workout, I walk on a treadmill at 10 degrees incline for 30 minutes at 3.8 mph. I then walk outside at night for at least another 4 miles sometimes 6. I have bicycle which I don't ride as much as I should. I have a Fitbit charge HR since 2014 and recently upgraded to the charge hr 2, the only time this is not on my wrist is when I'm in the shower or it's charging. The miles are off on the Fitbit, using map my walk or map my ride, the fitbit states 3.2 miles when I have done 4 miles. But it's small and easy forgotten on the wrist. The HRM is off slightly, compared to my chest strap set up, when that reads 176, my Fitbit reads 169, at 156 my Fitbit reads 148. If off constantly but it's a good relative reading for intensity. I'm looking for close repeatability, if I'm at 144 then I know I need to push myself, if i'm around 165+ I know I'm good.

The Fenix 5x, the HRM is off, really off, today was the final straw, I used the strength and treadmill app, only during my warm up did my heart rate climb to 156, after that it never ever went above 100, I wore my Fitbit and chest strap to compare. At odd times checking my chest would read 156, my Fitbit 148 the Fenix 5x 84. It was really off, really off. On the watch face, just sitting here, it's reading 141 at the moment and my Fitbit is 85. It was great for outdoor walking yesterday, it got my miles down perfectly in tune with map my walk. However I got this for the fitness data and if it off by so much then the data is worthless. After an hour of strength training where apart from the warm up it did not go above 100 bpm, the watch told me I needed to rest for 4 days?. Wow it's going to freak if it stayed with me for the entire week.
This is nice looking watch, at full MRSP it needs to be perfect, the screen is not very bright, very washed out and looks 8bit, it's too large to wear 24/7 and the HRM is a deal breaker for me. I will return it, maybe when it goes on sale for 299 and they have fixed the HRM with firmware updates I would look at it again as a part time watch, but at full price it as too many issues for me to keep.

Used my 5x and garmin hrm at crossfit earlier. This was the trace. Early part was warm up and strength part. The latter part was the work out and the hr was obviously much higher.

Was this with the built in HRM or a separate chest strap?
  • I never use the WHRM at the gym because of the well documented inaccuracy. I was using a chest strap but got rashes so only use the chest strap while running and now use s Rhythm+ on my upper arm for strength and HIIT.

I still use the WHRM while walking and it's fine and seems accurate.

With the heart rate strap. The watch monitor is crap at measuring strength training imo.

I have tested a variety of sports/GPS watches and I always say never depend on a wrist based HRM and use a chest strap. Wrist based HRM can be affected by a range of factors from vibrations say on a bike to the movement in the wrist when lifting weights or performing other activities involving the wrist.

It?s also interesting to hear you are having better results with a Fitbit as I have tested the entire range and found them to be not as accurate. I am not questioning your view, just interested in the experience you have had

Before you send it back consider that pairing it with a run HRH or a tri HRM would give you a accurate read and provide you with some decent data when running. If the HR readings is the only issue and you are choosing the Fitbit for that reason you are missing out on loads of data from the Fenix 5x that could be useful to you.

  • The OP's essential point is correct: At the price point Garmin has set, the watch has to be perfect to provide good value for money, and sadly it is not. I returned mine last month as well, after thoroughly testing navigation in the backcountry, on the road (cycling and automobile), and the golf app. I do like the watch but for $949 CAD it had to do everything very well and allow me to replace all other GPS devices. These were the problems I had with it:

    1. The Canadian topographical maps did not have contours, as promised by Garmin.
    2. The turn-by-turn directions for cycling were often confusing and I eventually concluded it's unusable for trail riding.
    3. The turn-by-turn directions for automobile are glitchy, with the text instructions sometimes conflicting with the directions on the map. On almost every trip I would run into a situation where the map called for a right-hand turn, but the instructions said to stay left on the current road only to change upon hitting the intersection.
    4. The golf app is sub par and is worse than my S3. Why not throw full color hole maps on there?

I have an original F3 not HR, I use the chest strap for my HR activities. However I'm keen to understand how many people with the HR versions have hairy arms and how much that affects the readings?! I think the optical HR on the watch is a nice idea but just not practical enough for accuracy.

I have found it?s good for everyday activity, running, walking. For cycling it?s not great and for anything involving the wrists it?s not good either. I would keep to the chest strap

I do strength training every day and I have never used the 5x with it.
I did record a session with each schedule with the F3 and HRM Run and keep duplicating the same log over and over on ST3.

The watch is really not designed for that but it should work nonetheless. Maybe the OHR is broken? Don't give up on it just yet, contact the support, have it replaced and see if the new one works for you. That's my 5c.

About the f5x group filled with harsh people... I have never seen one and post and comment every day. Run4IQ. ;)
  • i do agree with original post, that the wrist HRM is totally inaccurate for any activity involving wrist, such as lifting weight, indoor rowing, or sometimes, jump rope. Wrist HRM record very low HR for those activities. For walking or running, it's fairly accurate. I remember i read same complaints regarding fenix 3 in concept2 rowing forum. Not sure if this is going to be fixed by garmin
