Feature Request: Hourly Chime

I just came over from ProTrek land and am really missing my hourly heartbeat!

If I'm missing the setting and it's available deep in some menu somewhere, please let me know!

It seems insane to me that this isn't an option. Hourly chime has been a staple, standard feature of digital watches since digital watches came out.

I get that the API needs to limit watch face access to the system for stability and energy optimization but it seems like this could easily be added as a basic system option the way other notifications and alerts are always available if people want them.

Please add this!
  • Hourly alerts have been added to 5.83 beta software in the Fenix 5 series (and FR935).

Updated to 5.83 for the hourly alert. Overall, I like it.

On the hour it beeps a quick half-second double beep and-or vibrate, depending on your Alert Tone settings at Settings > System > Sounds > Alert Tones.

Hourly alert is toggled with Do Not Disturb mode, as expected. While in DnD, it does not beep or vibrate.

It also displays a fullscreen banner for 10 seconds that reads "Hourly Alert" and displays the time.

Personally, I don't like the banner at all. That fact that it's a new hour is immediately apparent when I look at my watch. It doesn't make any sense to replace my information-rich watch face with a screen that tells me that it's a new hour, and contains no other information. Now when I look at the watch after the hourly alert, I have to either clear the banner or wait ten seconds before I can access any other information.

I would definitely vote to either get rid of the banner, or make it optional within the hourly alert settings.

Either way, I'm really glad this feature was added, and I thank the Garmin dev team for their attention!!
  • So let me get this straight, someone asked for a pretty useless feature at the beginning of August and it was already available at the beginning of September.
While many MANY users ask for more crucial fixes & features and they are gently ignored...

I didn't buy this watch for an hourly alert, but I did buy it for A WORKING ACCURATE GPS!
  • This feature has been requested a number of times over the years, at least since 2013. Perhaps Garmin just didn't want to feel outdone by CASIO and this was prioritised :) On the other hand it is a lot easier to implement an hourly chime in software than improve GPS performance which likely requires a hardware change.
  • Wonder why he posted it in a thread where people are actually asking for the feature? He posted it in the beta thread and nobody agreed with it there either.
  • Whilst there are negative reactions to this I suspect that if Garmin did any analysis they would have found several users on the forum asking for this and plenty of general requests for this feature on other Garmin watches and other brands' watches. Easy to implement and a no-brainer then, even if some people hate it although a vibration only alert shouldn't raise any objections provided the option is available.
  • I don't think he objects to the hourly alert in principle, just to Garmin spending any resources on anything but GPS accuracy... and yes, ain't nobody going to complain about a vibration, not even me ;) )
  • It seems clear that Garmin isn't going to spend any time improving GPS accuracy. I suspect it is a point of pride for them. And trying to get product support to acknowledge the myriad other bugs that exist requires a lot of effort that is beyond the patience of most. That leaves the developers plenty of time to spend on adding mildly pointless bells and whistles...
  • That feature hasn't been added to fenix 3... Quite disappointed.
