Altimeter/barometer in watch mode

Please someone explain in human words, what is altimeter/ barometer in watch mode, when and what to use. Thanks.
From manual: Not During Activity Sets the sensor used in watch mode. The Auto option uses both the altimeter and barometer according to your movement. You can use the Altimeter option when your activity involves changes in altitude, or the Barometer option when your activity does not involve changes in altitude.

Put simply...

Are you going out on a trail run/hike/backpacking, or any activity in which you expect there to be lots of altitude changes? If yes, use altimeter mode.

Are you going to be doing something that's either stationary, or not expecting changes in altitude? If yes, use barometer mode.

Don't know? Use automatic.
