Possible to turn off turn-by-turn alerts while navigating?

The main reason I purchased the 5X was to use it while hiking. Others may find the turn-by-turn alerts helpful, but I do not. I've tried several things to turn them off:

Setting up the course in BaseCamp with the "Will not alert" option set.
Creating routes (without waypoints) in other systems (e.g. gpsies.com) and loading them in the NewFiles folder, as GPX tracks, GPX routes, FIT files, and TCX routes.

Nothing has worked. Every method I try, the 5X still alerts with a chime, vibration, and the black banner at the bottom with the distance to the point. It also seems like the 5X is throwing in additional alert points since it sometimes alerts even when there is no turn.

This behavior has been consistent with every version of the software I've tried. I just tried it again with 4.21, and there's no change.

I have to imagine this is a bug, since it's not respecting the "Will not alert" setting in BaseCamp. I submitted a report to the beta address, along with another issue I saw relating to BaseCamp changing a course to a track when the 5X is disconnected and reconnected; they responded looking for more info about that issue, but not about being able to turn off the alerts. I really hope this isn't standard behavior and will be changed in a future version - I don't want to hike with a device that's chirping every few minutes.

Has anyone figured out a way to turn these off?
  • What navigation method are you using, follow course or on map?

If you are using follow course and create the course on dynamic.watch and use their ConnectIQ app, RouteCource in watch, you get no TBT. They do not support it. That is the most user friendly place that I've seen to create routes. I just would like them to support waypoint's fot 5x.
Another way is to use gpsies.com without waypoints save it as tcx convert to fit with McBadger tool. Instead of McBadger you can also use RouteCourse and load the course from GPSies. Even if it have waypoints. They will be deleted when transferring.

Do not use Navigation on map. The hole idea with it is to give you TBT based on map.

Thanks for the reply and those ideas - I'll check them out. I'm using "Follow Course" - sorry, I should have said that earlier. I'd expect TBT when set to "Use Map".

It seems like with dynamic.watch you're not using the maps or navigation on the built-in Fenix app, but instead using their apps. Do I have that right?
  • They have two variants. RouteCourse or now their excellent widget is just a download app and you use your built in maps.

  • Unfortunately there is no way to turn these banners off! This is frustrating because I can't imagine this is a big job to do.

I could live with the banners, it's the chirping that is the biggest problem for me. If I were hiking with someone that had an electronic device making noise every few minutes, I wouldn't want to hike with them for long.

Hopefully we'll get a new property in the settings options for each activity for "Turn-by-turn alerts" on/off. Like you say - I can't imagine it would be that hard to add. It doesn't impact anything else on the watch. Is the setting on? Show the alert. Is it off? Don't show the alert.

Now, this is coming from memory, so treat it as such. But on a recent multi-day hike, I'm pretty sure I managed to turn of audible alerts doing the following:
I first started the activity (hiking). After that, I started navigation from within the acitivity and loaded the course (which I earlier had loaded with help of the gimporter widget.)
While both activity and navigation were running, I accessed the main settings > system > sounds > alert tones and turned it off (this seems to keep reset for every activity??)

I am not sure, whether this would work, regardless of how the fit-file is formatted or if I was just lucky. Just anecdotal ;)

That would work, but it would turn of ALL alert tones on the watch. I'd still want other alerts (off course, calories, or whatever else I've specified), but not for every point in the course.

    Thanks for the reply, though!

Fair enough. However, at least for me, the setting does not stick between activities. Probably a bug to be reported. On the other hand, it makes it possible to get close to what you want to accomplish: when set to navigation, all alerts only vibrate during navigation (vibration for any other alerts as well).
As soon as the activity ends, the "not during activity"-setting kicks in.
When starting the next activity, the earlier system setting is lost and gets reset to defaults. (that bug).
So, I don't have any of those extremely disturbing sounds when out in the boonies ? but do get all alerts and additionally get back to "annoy all your peers with sounds"-mode when returning back to civilization. ;)

So no, not the granularity you are asking for ? but at least an acceptable workaround for my needs.
